I'm not sure if there's a way you can actually tell on the external portion of the Touch itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch

You can make sure he's upgraded it to OS3.0 and then check to see if there's Bluetooth. Don't forget that this could be a "hot" iTouch.

If the picture is of a high enough quality, there are two ways to tell:

1) If the device border is chrome, it's the 2nd gen model. The 1st gen model used a matte black border.
2) If there is a volume rocker on the left side, it's the 2nd gen model. The 1st gen model didn't have a built-in speaker, so it did not have a rocker either.

Wikipedia's 2nd gen and 1st gen pictures illustrate this rather well.

Here is the easiest way to tell on the back. The first generation iPod Touch had a back similiar to the first generation iPhone, flat, anodized aluminum. The second generation iPod Touch has a curved, chrome aluminum back.

Chrome trim around the screen, volume rocker, and thinner.

Aside from that, just having someone say, 16GB iPod Touch doesn't give enough information.

Actually it's a tiny bit thicker, it just seems thinner because of how it's shaped.
