Hi
this rig's been up and running fine for a long time- first built 18 months ago.
Can't even remember the last time I opened it up.
Installed a new program Fri but it was fine all day and Sat morning.
Saturday afternoon, I shut down 'normally', except that 2-3 programs stopped responding during the shutdown process, so I clicked "end now". That wasn't normal. But didn't really think anything much of it.
Problem 1: Started up later that day -- everytime it got into Windows XP, it rebooted.
I tried system restore back up to 3 days but there were no changes to restore, it said.
Ran some Nortons Systemworks stuff. All ok.
Ran repair from the winxp cd.
still the same problem- reboot as enters winxp
Got into safe mode and uninstalled the antivirus (AVP) which I had updated the definitions (only) earlier that day and then I could reboot normally.
So I imaged it to a different partition. Now it will just reboot randomly once or twice a day, even with no one at the pc.
It gets a blue screen that says it's dumping the physical memory. counts to a 100 and reboots.
This had been an ULTRA stable machine and random reboots signify a problem. Temps are 45. In the normal range for this rig.
specs
ati rage fury pro 32 mb- display looks good
iwill kk266
western dig hard drive - no clicking or anything.
512 mb - don't remember the brand
amd 1 ghz tbird, OC to 1.33
Do you think it's hardware or software related?
Problem 2
the floppy drive is not working now either.
The BIOS tests before it loads win says floppy drive fail (40)
can this be related, or just coincidence?
is it fixable?
Thanks
