LEAGUE CITY, TX (KTRK) -- The search is on for the driver who ran over and killed a man in League City, but police tell us some interesting information was left at the accident scene.
Investigators tell us the driver of the car that killed a man and then left the scene, left a message behind.
It is almost unheard of -- an anonymous note from a suspect. It's certainly the first time League City Police have encountered such an apology letter. The problem is that for now there's no identity to go along with the handwriting.
His name was Maurice Jones, a carpenter who had recently fallen on hard times, enough that he had taken a new job at a League City McDonald's. Late Saturday, he was walking home to his mother's house when he was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. Near the body, police found a handwritten note.
"I can't go into details about the content of the note, but we do feel that the person who left this note was remorseful and felt some sorrow," said Scott Aldridge of the League City Police Department.
Jones' mother, Ramona, says she was told the note read, 'I'm sorry, but I have a family.'
"I'm sure they knew that they did wrong and that they didn't really want to face the consequences," said Ramona.
Police believe the handwriting to be that of a woman. Detectives suspect she could be anywhere from 25 to 40 years old and if that person was willing to leave a note, they may start talking about it as well.
"We're asking the community to help us out on this. If someone spoke to them about it, if they were trying to get something off their chest, to notify us and let us know. We do believe this person was remorseful for their actions," said Aldridge.
Three isn't enough remorse to bring back Maurice Jones, but his mother definitely wants a name to go along with an unsigned note.
"It will help me...even though to me it's the hardest chapter in my life to close," said Ramona.
League City Police have notified body shops in the area to be on the lookout for any damage that may be the result of this hit and run case.
Funeral services for Maurice Jones will be held this weekend.
