Sore upper back/neck

I woke up Monday with a really sore upper back and neck. It is so bad I can't turn my head left or right and can't tilt my head up or down. It feels like the muscles are always tense and my neck can't support the weight of my head. It still hurts and has not improved.

This has only happened to me one other time and it was earlier this year. It went away after about a week.

It is a very odd feeling. I haven't done anything recently that would cause this and I regularly exercise.

The only thing I can think of is I was in a head on car accident about a year and a half ago. Could these symptoms be related? I didn't have any symptoms after the wreck and felt fine.

Did you have a draft or breeze on you last night as you slept? That can do it to me, really bad.

I had the same thing happen on tuesday and it is still so sore i can barely move my neck (and i'm playing basketball tonight! eek)

I don't think it has anything to do with anything other than sleeping in a weird position. I think i probably had my head at a strange angle or on my arm or between pillows or something.

Its happened a couple times and gets better in a few days.

yes, it's happened to me before (but hasnt in a long time). typically if you sleep way too long, your back/neck will be sore. but if you sleep in an awkward position where part of your spine/neck isnt really supported, your muscles will pick up the slack and you will wake up with very tight muscles. get some icyhot or bengay and slather some onto the sore spots, that should help tons.

Wow you guys are psychic!

I did just start sleeping with a fan on (breezy) and I have been sleeping in longer the last week or so.

I will try the Icyhot. The last time this happened the doctor prescribed some high powered Naproxen which definitely helped but made me too loopy. I have a wedding this weekend and don't want to start taking it if I know I will be drinking.

Thanks for the tips!
