Sore Throat

I am a 23 year old healthy non-smoker. Today is the third day for me of a dry, scratchy, sore throat. It came about on Friday and I though "aw crap I'll be sick all weekend" but I never got sick. My throat hurts like I'm sick, my neck feels swolen in the glands and the sides of my throat are sore to the touch, but I feel otherwise great.

I tried looking online to see what it could be, but it seems anything from mono to throat cancer (everything leads to cancer online). Anyways, I know there are some MDs here and since it's sunday and I can't make it to the Dr. I thought it would be fun to see what ATOT's advie on this was.

Again, I fell like a million bucks except my throat feels swolen (especially right under the ears). It's uncomfortable to swallow, I have a very very very porradic nasty sounding cough (I cough once every other hour or so), and the sides of my throat (where the glands are and under the ears) is mildly to moderately painful to the touch.

I lifted weights yesterday and jogged for 20 min and I still felt great so there are absolutely no other symptoms. Eyes are not dry or watery, no congestion anywhere, nothing. Think I should go to the doctor? Any idea what it could be? I have never had my tonsils removed by the way. Thanks in advance.

Dunno. You should probably go to the doctor. It's unlikely that it can be diagnosed over the internet.

Could be post-nasal drip, could be strep, could be mono, unlikely to be anything life threatening (though that happens on a rare occasion.) I wouldn't go see the doctor over only those symptoms, personally, unless they stuck around longer than three days. If you see white stuff growing in your throat, run a fever, have those symptoms more than a week, or you feel like you're having trouble breathing, you should probably check in with your doctor.

You could have gotten a cut in your throat from some crunchy food.. Nachos or chips.

It has happened to me before.

I went to th doctor for the same symptoms once and he just told me I had a "laceration" in my throat. Its same as what you describe, lasts a few days, then heals.

Gargle with warm salt water.

some beer wouldn't hurt either.
