Sore Throat From Cardio

Amused

Elite Member
After a long bout of multiple illnesses and injury I'm back to doing cardio. (Average HR at 150 - I'm old) Now my throat is sore from drying out.

The humidity here has been very low for the past few weeks with the bitter cold and snow storms.

Dammit, I can't win for losing.

Anyone have any effective treatment for helping a raw throat and ideas how to prevent it?

drink more fluids. Are you getting your 8 cups of water per day? If its dry in your residence, you may have to up that to 12cups of water per day on top of all the food you eat, and other beverages you drink.

Also, keep salt intake controlled, eat more fruits and veggies.

Same problem here, burned some 300cals on sunday and had sore throat / fever / flu ever since. Damn you treadmills!

edit: I've been working from home ever since, but I was near death on monday. Feeling hot - > shivering cold -> hot -> shivering cold -> hot -> shivering cold. Dayquil would bring me back for like 2-3 hours though

Yeah, I drink boat loads of water. Hydration is very important as it prevents injuries and over training when body building. Hell, besides some beer or vodka once or twice a week all I drink is water

You think sodium really has an effect?

OK, I am hydrated. Maybe I should just bring a bottle of water with me and sip it regularly while I do cardio. Problem is, I hate doing that. Screws up my rhythm (what little I have for a white boy).

At any rate, anyone have any way to make this heal faster? Should I skip a couple days of cardio to not make it worse?

I have the same problem when I drink too much water running outside. I drink something with a little more substance, like Gatorade during, or warm milk or chicken soup before or after. Water just runs down, but Gatorade has a bit of a greasy film to it, so it doesn't leave your throat as clean.

For the healing, just grab a bottle of Chloraseptic & it'll numb it up right away.

you need to make sure you have all the necessary vitamins and minerals (there are 50ish). Since you just started back up, you have to alter your diet so that your body gets what it demands now, not what it needed back when you were not doing cardio (if that makes sense).

If you increase your salt intake, you need to also increase your potassium, magnesium and calcium intakes at least since your muscles need all of these and more to function correctly. Then you need the amount necessary for your body to do its normal everyday tasks...

Also, maybe there was a cold flying around in the gym? 😛

I just got over two back to back colds and the last one ended with an extremely severe case of bronchitis. If I have another cold I'm climbing a tower with a rifle. :|

This is normal in cold, dry weather. Try hydrating immediately before your cardio, and breathing through your nose instead of your mouth. If you are doing your cardio outside, try to switch to an indoor location. As for treatment, try some lemon honey tea (excellent for helping a sore throat) and if you have a humidifier, use it.

It was in the gym on the eliptical. I drank plenty of water while lifting prior to doing my cardio.

I guess I'll have to keep some water with me.

Fighting a bad cold, with sore throat right now. I get a lot of relief from hot herbal tea sweetened with honey. Pretty soothing on a raw throat and it helps contain my coughing some.

I'm sure my cold came from the gym as well. Tons of germs all over the place there.

I have to have water to replace all the water I sweat out when doing Cardio. You may want to try a lozenge or hard candy when you do cardio, it'll keep your mouth and throat moist. As for your condition now, it sounds like your immune system is a little weak, probably from over training.

Yeah the gym is a literal petri dish of bacteria and germs.

I find that I get a dry throat for the first few times that I run on a treadmill. Your best bet would be to have some kind of fluid to drink while running, but don't over do it (Gatorade is preferable because of the electrolytes it replaces, but water is fine).

Just keep drinking water before, during, and after cardio in a good amount. What helps me, as stupid as it sounds, is if I put Vick's Vapor Rub below my nose/near my mouth. The menthol/eucalyptus soothes my throat. You may not like the idea of sucking the menthol smell in though, but it helps me.

Sounds to me like you're sick again Captain Kirk. 😉

Are there any high towers near where you live?

Hmm, nope. 😀

Damn it all to hell. 🙁

That hurts man...I thought we were friends...like Kirk and Spock. 🙁

Maybe I just wanted to shoot people you don't like... yeah, that's it.

You'll have to build a tower and bring them by when I visit.
