News Sophos just made Sandboxie's paid feature available for free. They also plan to make it open source.

I've been using the program for years to protect myself when I surf. I mainly use it to isolate my browser's activity from the rest of my system. I also force my download folder to run sandbox just in case I accidentally run something before I have a chance to scan it. Being about to force a program or folder contents to run sandboxed is one of the paid features they just made free.

If you get sandboxie from sophos they require agreeing to a EULA and you need to fill out of a form. Majorgeeks also has the download but others reported you didn't have to fill out a form.

Well, considering that Microsoft just made the same sort of technology available in their latest version of Windows 10, I guess it makes sense that Sophos would want to open-source theirs, just so that it doesn't die off, due to MS "cutting off their air supply" (like they did to Netscape, and so many other companies).

Just looked it up and the Microsoft Sandbox seem more like a VM as an app. It also uses way more resources and is only available for Windows 10 Pro and up. Cool idea but Sandboxie is a bit different in that it only isolates programs, files and folders. Seems like they could co-exist. Heck, I still occasionally turn on my light virtualization app and run my browser sandboxed when I go to risky sites. It's all about the layers.
