It's the coupling provided by the sideways motion of the whole shebang shifting on the pop cans.

The real mystery synchronization is when a whole herd of women living together wind up with their menstrual cycles all synchronized.

Negative feedback is the general mechanism. It's sort of like a mechanical PLL. You have some input phase that is something like the average of the phases of the various metronomes (the cans + board act like a filtering mechanism that does the averaging). This average phase is fed back to the metronomes mechanically via the board in the sense that the metronomes lagging in phase feel extra pull while the metronomes leading in phase feel less pull (this is like feeding a phase error back into a VCO), tending them to converge to the average phase.

Fun to see :) .

I always thought once that women periods where all already phase locked with the mooncycle ? I mean there seems to be a 14 day ovulation cycle. And then for 10 days settling of the egg. And then on average 4 to 5 days to flush the unfertilized egg and part of the interior plumbing(endometrium) for again a fresh start.

And that is to be a 28 day to a 29 day cycle.
The same for the moon . 27,3 days to 29,5 days moon cycles.

I had to look it up again, because i only vaguely remembered it. ( I know, i am weird.)
