I've been out of the loop in terms of cooling, especially on air since I've been doing water for 8 years. I'm building a computer for a friend and he wants to cool an OC'ed Phenom II 940.

I just plopped a ZALMAN CNPS9700 into the cart. Is this cooler still pretty good? Any others out there?
 
Zalman are good for low noise, OC performance is not the best. Using a Zalman CNPS7000B now but tomorrow's project is to replace it with a Xigmatek HDT-S963 and both-through kit.

Edit: Seems the CNPS7000B still holds its own, even against the Thermalright coolers.
 
Zalmans are lame and I think in general, it's overpriced. Many here would agree. IMO you should get a Xigmatek, a Noctua, an OCZ or a Thermalright. Those seem to be better options with the OCZs and Xigmateks being the best bang for the buck if you get in on rebates and whatnot.
 
CoolerMaster Geminii 2 (I think that's what it's called)
It's massive, cheap (was damn near Free AR a while back), and does a decent job. Also cools my sticks of memory!
But there are MUCH better ones out there.
 
I am running an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO at the moment on my Phenom II 940 BE at stock settings. Its running really hot. Idle is 15 degrees Celcius over ambient case and it soars to 63 degrees Celcius under 4 core load which is just not kosher.

I am going to LAP the HS tonight and reapply my silver goop and hope that brings it down. If not, I am going to purchase another Xigma Rifle S1284 Rifle which is what I use on my Core 2 Duo.

 
Sunbeam CCF on its way to me in the next couple days. Right now, Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - runs ~30C idle and 48C load at stock.
 
I intend to use a ThermalRight HR-01X for my 940 when I get it. The HR-01X fixes the non-optimal orientation of the hs on the mobo (compared to the HR-01+), and the fins are separated enough as to be optimal for low-flow fans (as opposed to the TRU120E which will still have noise related to turbulence).
 
Wow. Installed a Xigmatek HDT-S963 and temps are down 10c - 20c from my Zalman. Whoever suggested the HDT-S1283, go for it. That's the 120mm of the one I have. Can't get better cooling for the price.

Installed the Sunbeam CCF last night - idle temps were 29C and Full Prime95 load temps were about 39C - a full 10C drop from the AC Freezer 64 Pro.

With that said, I did have the side panel of the case off (was just testing a new PSU and checking the HSF to make sure I installed it correctly), and the two exhaust fans in my P180 were also disconnected. I'll be interested to see how it does once I get everything put together. I will say that the CCF actually fits better and was easier to install than the Freezer 64.
 
How can their be something easier to install than the Freezer 64 Pro? It takes 15 seconds to take off my mobo ( ECS 790GX Black Dragon ) in the case.
