Sony's answer to iPod

Too bad it's sexiness compared to the iPod is like Catherine Zeta-Jones against Fausto in his sweaty thong. 😉

t is expected to sell for around ¥53,000, or $487, in Japan and less than $400 in the United States, Sony said, undercutting Apple's 40-gigabyte device, which sells for $499 and can hold up to 10,000 songs.

$20 gigs for ~$400? No thanks. and screw compression.

Really? I was under the impression that
everyone knew about this. But
please, if I am wrong about this let me know, as I
only wished to prevent people from
starting a conversation where an existing
topic had already been started previously.

😛

(Seach for "Sony")

Atrac only, no other compression will work.

I think Sony may put up a fight in Japanese market, but here in US it is too little and too late.

If it doesn't support MP3, then that is correct. If it does, well, then they may have a chance but I see no reason to get it over the ipod unless you are a sony diehard.

Why do they always have to cripple their stuff?
I would love my netmd if it wasn't for their atrac junk.

because they like being proprietary, IE custom memory sticks etc.

I don't think it's that. They want to punish people who download free MP3 music. ATRAC makes MP3s inconvenient and causes them to lose some sound quality. I think it's their recording industry ties that force them to do these things.

Why do they even make audio players anymore if this is their logic? It's stupid, and Sony is betraying their roots as a company and what they are most famous for. There's no way around this one; they have to make something that plays MP3s to compete.

No MP3's? They'd be better off to re-release the cassette tape walkman.

I talked to some japanese students through netmeeting with my japanese class and they didn't know what an ipod was.

Are mp3's and pirating as prolific in Japan as they are in the States, and is it as big of a deal? I know China is the pirating capital of the world, but I wasn't sure where Japan stood in all of this. Or what about Europe?

You can rent CDs at Blockbuster type places so most of my friends in Japan just rent them and copy at home rather than try to find them online. That's why the MD was so popular when it was, it was a great alternative to casette.

well sony has their sony music division always f*cking with their audio releases. and attrac is supposedly more popular in japan..atleast relatively to the us. their portable consumer audio division is just really outa touch with america😛

looks pretty sweet.

if it has MP3 support by the time it's released in the US, I'd consider buying one instead of buying a new iPod.

From what I've seen, China & other Asian countries where piracy is rampant tend to sell knockoffs or duplicates of a work. You'd be more likely to find a knockoff audio cd for sale than an mp3.
