The perfect fit for a Nikon D3x, no? 6FPS to boot. Expected to ship "this summer".

Many expect Nikon to announce a new professional full-frame digital body in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics in August. Something to go toe-to-toe with Canon's full-frame 21.1-megapixel 1Ds Mark III.

can you say "D3X"? if it has the high-ISO performance of the D300 sensor, then it'll be good enough. I'm curious if Nikon will but the same CAM3500 AF sensor as the D3 and D300, or if they put in a full-frame AF sensor. I have a feeling that full-frame AF coverage will come with the D3s and D3Xs, though.

if the D3X release goes anything like the D3's, then production samples should be in the hands of pro photogs shooting the Olympics.

I want them to release a D90 at Photokina!

I'm confused. What do you mean by a "full-frame AF sensor"? The AF module in the D3 is a "full-frame AF sensor".

apparently sony has to stitch together two (or more) pieces to make a sensor that large (fab equipment generally only makes chips to a certain size, which is why the canon 1D uses a 1.3x crop, that's the largest sensor that, at the time, could be made in one piece). it's an expensive process. canon, apparently, has developed it's own equipment to handle making 135 sensors in just one piece.

the CAM3500 AF sensor is designed for an APS-C image area. on the D300 it fits perfectly, but the AF points are clustered really close in the center on the D3.

Hmm, interesting. I'll have to read up on that. Thanks for the links.

I'm not entirely convinced that the sensor is for Nikon since they have produced their own sensors for their professional cameras to date, haven't they? On the other hand, this sensor is almost certainly destined for Sony's upcoming A900.

Nikon designs their own sensors, but Sony manufactures them.

it honestly depends on the camera. the D2H and D3 sensors are entirely in-house. the D200 (also D80,D40x,D60) and D300 sensors are shared with Sony, although Nikon added some circuitry tricks of their own. no clue about the D70 (also D50,D40) and D2X sensors.

Iirc the D40 & D50 share the same Sony sensor (same 1 used by the KM 5D/7D & Pentax *ist DS/K100/K110D).
As mentioned whilst they may all share sensors the data processing is different between the 3 brands.

At the PMA Sony presentation they just confirmed that this sensor will be in their A900 with their Super Steady Shot type image stabilization build in... To be shipped before end of this year...

Still, it'll be interesting to see who else might pick this sensor up for their own use. Should be a good year to push things forward in the high-end camera world...

Do you know that Nikon Film cameras that came out even before Dslrs have AF points "clustered really close in the center"?
