Not a very in-depth article, but I'm pretty excited by the Z3 compact. Fantastic specs, great battery life, and just about the right size for me.

Has there even been any confirmation of where the Z3C will be available? I've only heard that T-Mobile is getting the Z3, no mention of the Z3C.

no official release yet for the z3 compact... sony US site has it coming soon

you can order from overseas retailers like Clove/Handtec (or US-based sites who get their devices from overseas, like expansys), but there's always the question/hassle of warranty (may need to ship overseas for warranty)

Z3 Compact orders are going about $500 USD shipped, which is a great price for a flagship mini phone

It looks great on the website but I'd still like to see and feel one in person before ordering one.

Talk about a serious step from the original plan/design for the simple use of this.....

Leave it to Sony to make an incredibly great device but decide not to actually try to sell it to anyone.

I want to empathize that Sony is a pain in the ass with this if you buy in a Gray market zone and not an authorized reseller. Even if they know the device is less than a year old, etc.

They are also a pain in the ass with their pricing, if you are authorized reseller you can't put an item on sale under a certain price without permission from Sony. Bose and several other "high end" companies are like this for they are trying to maintain an image of their products being some tier above the rest.

They're gonna sell it all over Europe and Asia. Thats like 4 billion people.
America is what, 300 million? And far too many of us are obsessed with Apple.

And of those 300 million they have to tailor a phone for each of the 4 carriers, put a carrier logo stamp on it, etc. Meh.

Honestly, Sony Ericsson did plenty well pre-smartphones by mostly serving Asia and Europe. Its likely they're not doing well right now because they didn't get the hang of a good phone til far too late.

At least with HTC they had competitive handsets all along and a pretty solid following.

Its now available on Ebay and Amazon for RIDICULOUS prices.

How much is it on Ebay and Amazon? I just checked on Expansys and it's selling for $520. And they have hundreds in stock ready to ship. I'm waiting for official US price from Sony website. It has to be less than Europe. But you never know with Sony.

Compare the average amount of money people in each region are willing to spend on a phone and suddenly the American market becomes a lot more valuable. Never mind that the typical contract-based model makes even more expensive devices more affordable to consumers.

I wonder whether or not you are right about this. Across continental Europe, I see a large portion of people willing to splurge on a phone. I don't know whether or not it's the American market that makes or breaks a phone launch, and even with this in mind it would be great if Sony released its high end phones in the USA in a timely fashion. But I'll have no problem whatsoever getting a Z3, and in fact I'll be receiving one as a gift shortly (continental Europe)

More smartphones are sold in the US than all the major EU players put together:

That graph doesn't break down high-end and low-end, but I bet either China or the US leads there.

GfK translated from German is, Society for Consumer Research. GfK is Germany's largest market research institute

So for above $500 average selling price smartphones, what I will now call flagship phones (instead of budget phones even though their are things such as midrange phones but these are dying/reducing in price tremendously as the second graph illustrates).

It looks like for 2014 new Asia 84 million flagship smartphones (52 million China+32 million India and other emerging Asia) vs 64 million North America, 46 million developed Asia (Japan, South Korea, and such), 46 million Western Europe

I understand why Sony is avoiding the US market - between huge loyalty to Apple + Samsung picking up most of everything else, they'd have to steal share from these two. I don't think anyone has been able to make much of a dent besides LG who has been pushing hard for years and who knows how much money.

I'd be curious if the Z3 and Z3 Compact pick up share in Japan. I've been surprised how Apple-centric they've been. Now that Sony has no compromise phones, I wonder if they'll see increased success in their home market.
