I'm looking to purchase a camera around 200. After some research it's come down to these two but I'm still unsure of which to go with. Features I'm looking for a quick/easy shots, picture quality, HD 720p video capture, quick shutter response and compact size. Only thing straying me away from the canon is possible noise issues but I'm unsure if that's an operating error (novice not knowing how to adjust settings). :) Appreciate any feedback.

Do you own any other cameras now? Plan on keeping any existing SD cards? The bad thing about sony is you have to use their "memory sticks" and unless you have a dedicated reader, you'll be stuck with the ol' USB to PC mode.

the 2010 cybershots now take sd and sdhc cards which is nice and yes I plan on using a 16gb sdhc I have.

I have an sd780 as my point and shoot, and I think it is an excellent camera. Tough too - I had a major wipe out skiing a few weekends ago where I tumbled down a mountain for about 100 yards, and it survived the fall in my cargo pocket just fine (though my blackberry was busted).

Don't know about these specific cameras, but lately the reviews of Sony P&S's point out that image detail is pretty smeared.

I have a Canon A720IS, and even though it gets noisy at ISO 400 and higher, it retains more detail than most other P&S's I've seen.

Thanks for the feedback. I just saw a video from the sony and the thing I don't like is hearing the lens zoom in the audio. Kind of annoying. Although the canon only has digital zoom in the video, it will do just fine for my purposes.

I don't know if it is just my local wal-mart or the whole chain, but recently they dropped the price of the Canon SD780 IS to $169. Seems to be still selling at $199 most everywhere else still.
