I only ask because

I have that notebook. Bought it at Best Buy in March right when they came out. (and had the $150 MIR)
It's never crashed on me. I use it in its stock configuration though. It won't let you install nvidia's drivers, so you're stuck using the ones supplied by Sony, but I don't game on it anyway. I wouldn't call the Geforce4MX Go420 completely underpowered, it only has a 16MB frame buffer, so you aren't going to play return to castle wolfenstein on it (like you'd want to anyway).
Check out the cnet user reviews for it. I think its 100% recommended. Sony doesn't really advertise the FR130 (dunno why, maybe because it uses an Athlon XP-m chip, or only has a 14.1" screen?) but it's not "too good to be true." Its the real muthafockin' deal yo.
Because I only really use mine for typing papers, and surfing the web, I get about 3 hours battery life.
I mainly bought it because it used a mobile AthlonXP-m chip, had a built in combo dvd/cd-rw, had a floppy drive (yes i still use them), and the 14.1" screen at 1024x768 w/ Cleartype on, is good enough for me. It may/may not be right for you. But sure looks a helluva lot better than an Inspiron 1100...
