Sony Vaio Upgrade

My Dad has an older Sony Vaio system that has a DVD writer that is crapping out. I would like to get a nice internal replacement (like a Black NEC drive) for him for Christmas. What I am concerned about is that the Vaio has a curve to it's entire front face. Will a flat face component fit in the old one's place with no problem? He doesn't care that it won't look 'right', just as long as it works. I've never had a Sony apart so I don't know what to expect. Taking the comp apart right now to 'check things out' is not an option because he is working on some very sensitive items for work and I would rather not screw around with it and risk putting him out of commission for any length of time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, it should work once you get the construction of the case down... I have a different model Vaio... confusing at first to take out. And it should work fine for the one you posted.. my friend has that one.

Luckily DVD drives are standard and interchangeable. But some have shorter chassis than others which might be useful in a compact case like most Vaios have. Too bad they did that curved face thing. Maybe you can pull the drawer front off the existing one and make it fit somehow on the new one.
