Is there a way for me to know for sure the hardware is broken or its a software issue?

when i try the recovery option to default factory setting i get this message:

That is the driver that controls your touchscreen and trackpad, and it tells you that it is a software issue. It could be corrupted. If so, it needs to be replaced. To navigate until then, use a mouse or the keyboard.

i use the mouse, but when i use the tool provided by vaio to recover the os to factory settings, this is the message i get.

That tool obviously is not working. Go to Control Panel and Device Manager, and see if all is well under Human Interface Devices. Your touchpad driver should be listed along with its status.

under device manager there is a component with the yellow triangle, which imho is the touch pad, i tried uninstalling it and rebooting but nothing changes. I also tried get latest driver but it says it is up to date.

Go to Sony's website and download the latest driver. Then install it over the existing one. Sometimes you have to use brute force.
