This deal is much better than the one I got from Egghead if they don't charge taxes, but I added up the costs... not much different since my package came with the 16 external cd-rom which value for $250-300 if purchased separately. This is a great deal if someone wants the bare system with no floppy and cd-rom.

**************** Egghead ---------------------- Passport Deal

Laptop --------- $1899.99 --------------------- $1829.99
shipping (NY) ---- $19.99 (Airborne 2 days) ----- $37.74 (standard ground)
Tax --------------- $0.00 ---------------------- $155.55
Passport Deal ----- $0.00 --------------------- -$404.66 (20% of $2023.28)
Sony Rebate ---- -$100.00 --------------------- -$100.00
Includes 16x
cd-rom ($250) ------- Yes ---------------------- $250.00

Total ---------- $1819.98 -------------------- -$1768.62

Just realized something... if I ship to NJ then I can save $155.55 which brings the total for the Passport deal to $1712.18. So between two deals I would have saved $107.

this is actually a bit off topic, but to those of you who is thinking of purchasing a laptop using MSN Passport deal, I would suggest making your purchase at Mercata. Because mpsuperstore.com, also listed for the deal, is actually run by MARINE PARK CAMERA & VIDEO, INC. I found that out from a whois lookup because the site looks a bit shady and it's hard to find the detailed company information within the site.

Just a bit of background information on this company, they are known for selling used (and all kinds of) units as new. They were actually blacklisted in the laptop industry because of that. At least that's what I got last time when working at one of the major laptop distributors in the nation.

I don't know if they still run their business the same way, but I would urge those who have put an order in at mpsuperstore.com to inspect their goods very thoroughly once received. Don't be fooled by the outside look. Inspect everything thoroughly. And check the unit for scratches.

Anyway I'm just trying to keep a headsup. Not trying to bad mouth the company or anything. Have nothing to gain by doing that. Just want fellow Anandtechers to know who they are dealing with.

Hope you guys can grab all the hot deals! And to those of you who might be asking the same silly question I was, the MSN Passport deal can be used for multiple purchases, even with the same merchant. There's no limitation like one per person. :)

Are you sure that that laptop is part of the 20% off deal? The MSN site says to look for "holiday bonus!" and I don't see that by the sr7k laptop.

Type-R,

It's 20% off on whatever you purchase from MSN's 20% off participating merchants.

Has anyone placed an order with them using Passport? Their confirmation page and email do not show the 20% off. When I called, I was told the discount will be applied, but I'm nervous because there is no written confirmation to that effect.

<<mpsuperstore.com, also listed for the deal, is actually run by MARINE PARK CAMERA & VIDEO, INC>>

if that is the case.........then I would suggest to pass this deal since it's been well known in the camera forum that this company is a "NO NO" shop to deal with.

all kinds of hooks and baits to lure customers and then starting ripping them off by selling lemons.

stay away......repeat.

I totally agree with Siamskunk (nice name). Marine Park is probably the worst mail order company you can possibly imagine. I would NOT buy anything from them because they are a bunch of completely dishonest, shameless crooks.

I had a very, very bad experience with them, and so had many others. I ordered a Toshiba laptop from them (I believe it was Tecra 500) a couple of years ago. The price was good, and they told me that they had the laptop in stock. After 10 days, no laptop was delivered to me. So I called, and they said they did not have one in stock but would be delivered in next couple of days. I trusted them, and waited a few more days. Of course, no news. So I called them, and found the laptop had not been delivered yet. I got really angry (and I had every reason to be) and cancelled my order. I bought a laptop from another company.

The real story begins here. After 2-3 weeks, I received a laptop from Marine Park. I cancelled my order clear and loud! Even worse thing was that the laptop was NOT even a new one. It was a refurbished! It did not stop there. They charged me $200 more than they originally quoted. No, it did not stop there either. The laptop did not even carry a U.S. warranty because it was for Japanese market -- an obvious black market item! CAN YOU BELIEVE THESE GUYS?

So I called them, and tried to return. And they refused! They said that they had specially ordered it, and thus could not got it back. I fought. Finally, they said they would accept the return but they added that they had to charge 20% restocking fee. At this point, I had enough, and I called to my credit card company, New York State Better Business Bureau, and Department of Justice. After a couple of days, a manager called me and told me (very nicely) that they would accept my return. But I had to pay the return shipping, and haven't heard from them even though they said they would reimburse the return shipping cost.

Sorry for the long story, but you get the point. DO NOT EVER DEAL WITH THEM! DO IT AT YOUR (VERY HIGH) RISK! Generally, I think that it is not a good idea to deal with New York City-based camera/video mail order companies -- they are very notorious for various bad business practices.

sorry that you'd been through this BS company.....as I said....there are many many horrible stories about this company.

So if you are the one that has got into this deal....be aware...and be sure you check and record everything including the price, spec', warranty and in stock status (wouldn't hurt if you wanna tape the conversation with csr...I know some people do this...hehe)

I hope you get what you want....if not....try to fight to death, don't let them stay and hurt others.

Actually guys, the deal posted here looks to be better overall when calculated.

It'll come to 1804 with the 5 per cent off coupon, plus the 100 dollars from sony, to $1704 with the external cd rom and free shipping!!

Pretty damn good deal imho :Q

I'll wait a review from zuffy and others :)

It is interesting that this seemingly good deal is for a product that is on clearance. I suppose sony is phasing them out.

To save a few dollars is great, deal with a reputable company though.
If this is one of though 10" display laptops with no CD rom,its not that great (15" display would be nice though). I'm from NYC and I agree that the return policies, even in the BM stores weren't that good
in the smaller stores. (this is probably a BM trying to pull $ out of cyberspace). Anyone have an address for them, I'll have a relative look them up?

BTW, they are out of stock on this laptop, so I cancelled the order. I hope they won't pull any tricks with my credit card number.
