I currently have an HP laptop and it's pretty good. I've had it for 3 years now and ...besides for the fact that it gets so hot you can't put it on your lap for fear of becoming sterile and that i already had to replace the battery... i like it and have no complaints. So i'm thinking of giving this one away to my family and getting myself a new one. The Sony vaios look pretty sweet and sony generally has a good reputation. Anybody hear have a Vaio or have heard good/horror stories about it? Should i shell out for a sweet sony? If not, what are some of the best looking and performing laptops out there? Thanks.

A battery in 3 years is very normal.
You can buy a good TP T4x series for less than a Sony.

I'd avoid Sony... who knows what kind of crap they have secretly installed on there.

I'd get an IBM of some sort.

I don't care about that because i'd format it as soon as i get it anyways. I was just wondering about the quality of their stuff. And i think IBMs are ugly and even more overpriced than sony.

In my experience, VAIOs are pretty good quality. They're pretty overpriced though and so are the official Sony branded accessories. Also, you can't just format the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows because you'll need some utilities (primarily the one for the touchpad, and any media buttons if it has them) and you can get them only on the recovery disks (if they still supply those). Last time I tried doing that, the recovery disk wouldn't run because it would give me a message that it wasn't the correct VAIO I was running it on. I guess the preloaded Windows has some sort of code in it that the recovery disk checks to see if it is the VAIO it shipped with.

I ended up having to call Sony for help with the issue. They pointed me to a site that showed how to extract the files needed from the recovery disks. It wasn't a simple process though and was time consuming.

You can get more tips about it at at site called VAIO Village.
