Sony Vaio laptop won't run without AC power

This just started happening to my two year old laptop. When plug in the AC power the yellow (or is it orange) LED on the front of the laptop that indicates battery charging does not turn on. When i unplug the AC power the laptop shuts off.

What could be the problem? Can I fix it by simply getting a new battery?

Try this if you haven't already. Take out the battery and boot up on ac power alone. Shut back down and put the battery back in. Sometimes this will fix the laptop not powering on with the battery. Best of luck, hopefully you won't need a new battery...
