Sony Vaio Laptop Screen Problem

The screen on my Sony Vaio Laptop doesn't seem to be working anymore. At first I thought the screen was not on at all, but after close examination, I've found that the image IS there; however, its so faint that you can't see it.

I've checked the obvious things like screen brightness settings, but have not been able to find the problem. Before I call it a bad screen and hunt for a replacement, I thought I'd ask you guys. I'm almost positive I've seen this exact problem before, but I can't remember what the problem was for the life of me.

Any ideas?

Yup... sounds pretty much like a dead backlight alright. If trying to adjust the brightness settings has no effect, then you know for sure.

I've seen this on a laptop before, but it was only some weird hibernation error. That is definately a dead backlight, which to an LCD, spells death. Try getting on eBay and looking up -exactly- the kind of LCD you have. A friend of mine that deals on eBay alot bought Compaq, HP, Toshiba, and Sony LCDs that work excellently in newish Laptops. He bought a P4 2.8 for really cheap because the screen was broken. Then paid very little for the LCD. I wish you luck.

Nah, the LCD itslef is fine. You can replace backlights w/o throwing the LCD out. Probably significantly cheaper to do too. Check and see if sony will sell you a new backlight.

Regardless, he picked up LCDs for as little as $40. Others around $80. All he had to do was plug in the ribbon cable and reassemble.

it COULD be the FL inverter too, the backlight isnt the only thing that fries on laptops to make that happen. FL inverters are easy to replace, and USUALLY around $30, you can check if its the inverter by taking the lcd bezel off, it usually sits right above the base, inbetween the hinges on the bottom of the lcd assembly. Its high voltage so if its fried you can usually see physical evidence of it, although i have had some that werent physically fried, but i needed a voltmeter to see if they were putting anything out, you have to be very careful with that when its on because they are very high voltage. You could send it to us, we are sony authorized, but i dont know where you are, or how much youd be able to ship it for, we are in Columbus, OH. I have changed backlights in lcds before as well, it not too dificult depending on the lcd. Technically the backlight is a lightconductive sheet of plastic, the light itself comes from the FL Tube, thats what actually burns out. Sometimes the FL inverter, can cause the blow out, which sounds like what happened to the guy in the other thread. Check us out if you want to, i do it all the time, so nothing new to me =)
