What's the device you need to hookup with?
I use a 6pin connector to 4pin connector/cable to connect my devices.

Your device can clearup this matter.

I didn't think that would work, because I thought the last two pins were for providing the volts to power the device. Please tell me if I'm wrong.

The device is an interface for portable recording into software on my laptop.

The description for the device says: "Bus powered (requires a non-adapted 6-pin FireWire port on the computer) - no additional power supply necessary for complete recording freedom."

If you need to power the device, it WONT work, you'll need to buy a firewire pccard that'll supply power. 4 pin does not supply power.. even if you convert it.

You would want a 6pin firewire expansion card for you pcmcia, or expresscard (if they are out). You might want to check that the power in the pcmcia or expresscard is sufficient to power the the external device. If it isnt, the pcmcia cards usually have the abilty to add external power to them to provide sufficient power. Though your external device may be able to use a 4pin if it has external power as an option.

Basically, laptops only have 4-pin 1394 ports (data only, no power.) In order to use a firewire dvice, it must have its own power source. Latop Firewire ports are intended for use with digital cameras and camcorders. I use an external hard drive with mine and a burner - but they each have their own power.

Options:

A Firewire PCMCIA card that has a power module.

A Fire hub that has a power module.
