Sony Vaio Laptop - Memory upgrade

Hi, my Dad has a Sony Vaio laptop model PCG-FR720 and I bought him some RAM for Christmas to make it go a bit faster.

Now I've just got to figure out how to open the thing to insert the memory. I've looked online for the manual, but it doesn't detail how to open it. I've unscrewed a few of the panels on the back, but nothing there. I think there's a few more to try, have to get a smaller screwdriver.

I saw a guide online for an older model which involved unscrewing two small screws at the side, then sliding off the purple panel bit. No screws in the side as mentioned.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

I just spent a lot of time trying to find the answer for you - but apparently Sony does not have a model PCG-FR720 in their Vaio notebooks. At least, their search engine does not recognize it.

Memory is normally access in laptops through a plate on the bottom, most often held in place by a couple of screws. Vaio notebokks come in S, T, A, B, and A series. Could yours be an R series model?

In any case, there is a IQ section for FAQs, and I would suggest you email them with the question as to how to access your Vaio's main memory.

Thanks for the help. Yeah it's particularly difficult to find info about it online. It's definitely model PCG-FR720 though. Might be specific to NZ, not sure.

I'll try a few more of the screws on the back of the laptop to see if it's in there. I've sent of an email to Sony about it as well.

Hey, just a quick update. Thanks, you were right, the memory was in the middle panel on the back of the laptop. I hadn't opened that one before because the screwdriver wasn't unscrewing the tiny screws. I had to push a bit harder with the screwdriver to open it, but its there and I managed to install the other so-dimm without much effort. He now has 512MB and running at 2-3-3-6. Everest confirms it only running at 2T timings though which must hurt performance a bit. Been into the BIOS but nothing there to change it to 1T.
