Sony Vaio laptop Cd-Rom compatibility?

hey all,
well my best friend just gave me his 4 year old Sony Vaio Laptop (still good, even though he hates it). Seeing as how it has Windows Me running on it (*shudder*), i popped in an XP pro disk (burned, heh) to install and found out that the CD-ROM drive had completely crapped out on it. First of all, on the bottom of the case is the serial: Sony Vaio, model #PCG-9411. I googled that, then proceeded to sony's own website, and can't find any evidence that this model even exists (or did). After a while, I found another model number on the front under the LCD screen that reads: PCG-F610. I searched for that and found that that model does indeed exist. With that out of the way i proceeded to look for a replacement CD_ROM drive but couldn't find one anywhere. I looked on Ebay and found a guy selling a Sony Vaio PCGA-CD71 laptop CD_ROM drive. Not only could I really not find any info on this, I couldn't find any info about Sony's inter-compatibility among Vaio laptops (same generation too), where parts are concerned. any ideas anyone? please help 🙂
thanks
