So, a friend at work showed me this today. This company (GPS Computer Services LTD.) has the Sony VAIO FX340K for $500... in fact, all the prices on all of their laptops are amazing! There is another laptop with a P3-1GHz for $500.

I wanted to throw this deal out here on the floor so we can pick it apart and see if it is in fact legit. Note: These smae models are selling for almost 3 times as much in stores! What the hell is the deal here! I sure hope that it's for real and that I can at least PM off of it. :)

Here's the LINK

There have been previous Hot Deals threads about this company here and here.

If you do decide to take a chance I would highly recommend ONLY paying with a credit card, not money order, not debit/check card, not cashier's check, not PayPal or any other means ... why? Because with a credit card you're not out the money and you can always DISPUTE the charge stating you never received the product.

I'm suprised not everyone knows about gpscomputers yet. It's a pretty hot TOPIC in many forums. The deal with them is... that they normally don't deliver what you want, and they take your money right off the bat, since you are paying them with paypal. Credit cards do not back up fraud protection, since you are paying with paypal. Paypal might give you your money back, but I hear there are fees involved and it takes a while. There are no places that will pricematch them, so that is not an option. There was some news of people actually receiving the item they ordered, but it took well over a month or two. So that might give some buyers hope, but they rarely deliver. My opinion, not a hot deal, unless you have money you'd like to gamble with.

Hey Epsil0n00, I live southwest of Cleveland, so this is right in my backyard too. Wanna head out together? I'm gonna call the guy and offer cash on the spot for any of the $500 laptops. If he backs out, I'm done playing.

I might just have to drive by their 'offices' and snap a few pics for everyone's viewing pleasure.

My bet is his mother answers the door.

lol ..... did you see at the bottom of the left hand nav he has a Lan Party link? Guess there is your excuse for going over to scope it out. Actually it is more of a Cafe as he is supplying the computers and charging per hour.

I know gamers who have been to my FWGG Lan events, who live around them parts, I may give a shout to them to see if they can check it out if no one else gets to it.

I checked bbb, and well I suggest you guys go there and read what it has to say!! results of search for this company

So.... I called them this morning and asked some questions.
1. You pay cash upfront, or $100 downpayment (in person only), then they wait till they have 500 orders and then order en mass. They will ship to you once your order comes to them.

2. There is currently no retail store, they "are in the process of moving their offices." However, the woman said that they only moved one block down the street, but the webpage says that they have been moving since this summer... hmmm... 4 months to move 1 block? Yeah right....

3. They will not tell you who their supplier is, or provide any evidence that this is a legit deal. They suggested I call their business customers to ask them if they are satisfied. I asked for any proof that this is a legit deal, but they refused... they asked how many I wanted, I said 25. They then told me that they don't want to sell 25, they just want to sell 2-3 at a time. ??? WTF, they don't want to sell more??? Then they told me that they would rather that I buy from Bestbuy or CompUSA, because it sounded like I have too many doubts. I asked them if I would be dissapointed with their service and she replied, "I don't know sir."

What more needs to be said? This is a very sketchy deal at best. I would love to know how they are selling these lappies at $500--this is way below their cost. Where are they getting these things?!?! Anyone have any ideas? Maybe we should stake out their location and see if we can figure anything more out... anyone up for some special opps? No, seriously, who's ready to deploy?

Seriously, for the good of the Anand community, those that live close to this place should go check it out. Snaps some pics, have some dialogue with the employees, yada yada.

And then get back to us pronto! $500 lappies are serious flaming deals!

It's kinda shady when you can only pay by pay pal and not by credit card.
But if this is semi-legit, I think it might be worth it...
I wonder if I can dispute the charges on my credit card if I use Pay Pal...

Uhm, this may be a stupid suggestion, but maybe somebody should *DO* something about this site ? If nothing else, just so it quits popping up as a 'hot deal' here. Like maybe let the BBB know, or the local authorities ? I don't know what to do, but it sure doesn't seem right to let that site sit there waiting to rip people off...

from the BBB link:

"The Bureau has received over 100 complaints regarding refund practices and delivery issues."

"Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to a pattern of complaints. Complaints are concerning failure to deliver merchandise within promised time frames."

I would STAY AWAY.

There is currently no retail store, they "are in the process of moving their offices."

That means dad kicked them out of the guest bedroom out to the garage.
