Alright heres the deal;

I don't feel the need to build my own computer, so I want to buy a prebuilt. I've narrowed it down to two possible models.

1) Sony Vaio RS530G

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...44307&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01172

2) Hewlett Packard Pavilion a450n

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...69708&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01172

I currently own a Pavilion and they are pretty good computers and perform great for the money. The VAIO has caught my eye, due to its design, and looks to be a solid performer, though I have no prior experience with them.

Basically what it comes down to is, quality of parts inside, and what kind of power supply is in both. If anyone knows, it would be greatly appreciated. Also post your opinions on which one you would get, I figured this place would be best due to the huge userbase, definately a chance for more widespread knowledge. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

My opinion (which shouldn't mean much) is don't go with the VAIO. Even though the case design is pretty great, Ive heard a few bad things about them (mainly from a gaming perspective).

What exactly do you plan to use the systems for? And is it possible to benchmark either of them?

My reasoning behind this is because I work at CC :( and a guy came in and was talking with me. He had mentioned he bought a VAIO from a CC while back and it just perform that well. Sure enough he benchmarked it against a totally inferior computer (supposedly) and it lost miserably. Haven't heard that great from them, but thats just from my limited experience so take it with a grain of salt.

Nope cant bench them, im just a normal consumer, cant have that kind of access to them. I want to use them for gaming, but yeah I see your point about the VAIO. I tried to get info on the PSU from Sony themselves but they said they dont have access to that information, and all they could tell me is that it had a 3 prong plug and needed a 110 volt outlet lol

hahahaa, I work at best buy, I"m the tech, and they use 240 w which is junk, and if you ask me its dumb not to build your own computer or have someone else do it for you from better parts, even with the labor and horrible prices for parts you'll still come out about the same, unless your a cheapo and wanna buy some POS emachine, which by the way arent much worst then the VAIO's, then your really dumb if anyone ever convinces you to buy it from sony.

P.S. Not to mention you wanted it for gaming? MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! the best Sony we have has a 5200 Gforce LOLZ what a joke. I'll never forget a customer, who looked rather poor look at a Sony Celeron VAIO and ahh at the fact that it was only 749.99, the lady was in complete ahhh and she had no clue on what a piece of junk it was, I feel sad for those people and before I tried to help them, but now I just dont care, people dont seem to wanna listen they just hear, Va Va! Va Va VoM commercial crap. Hey if I a put a pretty flower in the middle of some poop and killed the smell, I could sell it just as long as I marketed it right. :)

P.S.S You said about the looks???!!! try a custom one from the GIGANTIC veriety of cases that you can have. And one more thing when you buy it from the sales man, please be nice to him about the service, he is not on commician and has masses amounts of supervisors on his ass about selling it so just feel a little compation.

MrRotory, you are the reason I don't talk BestBuy Salesman.

Anyway, any reason you won't go Dell or Gateway? They have better return policies. BestBuy and the likes have restocking fees and such that make the deals almost worthless if you don't like the product.

Ya, I would go Dell before I went HP or Sony, they would be able to make you a more up t date machine with faster components and an easier upgrade path. I worked for CC for 2 years and was never impressed by any of the PC's we sold, they all pretty much were junk in one respect or another.

Haha, and why is that? which part of me is it that EXCATLY that makes you not talk to Best Buy sales men, do they all run around and screen about how bad the computers are, hahahahaha, that was a jackas# comment, what did the salesman did to you? If you listened to my post very carefully I stated my dislike with companies that sell POS computers and get away with it. Ah now I think I know, your that jackas# thats comes in to Best Buy and has no clue what he is buying or what he should be buing nor does he know what he wants/needs your just want a good deal to feel good a bout, you want a nice cookie cutter. Usual case scenario, " ah I want something reliable and really fast and very cheap" <---- do you realize that what youve just said is an oxymoron?

Really thats very impressive ey? HAHAHAHAHA, people i speak the truth here, so even if i'm *geeky* rude about it just listen, lets see I have Dells come in all the time to get fixed and I wopty dooty take a look inside and what do I see? I answer to why dell went number one, the mobo had ONE PCI SLOT!!! AND THATS IT. upgradeable hmmm, I dont think so, thats worst then the cheapest POS emachine ive seen, they'll atleast have 3 pci slots, and then the usual no agp two slots for ram and man was that board tiny. Mmm yea, dell is junk too. 240 w ps, 240 w ps, 240 w ps ask any tech (hmm like me, i'm the Head tech at Best Buy :D ) and PS is one of the most crucial parts of the comp.

P.S. I dont talk to customers like this obviously at work, but its what i'm thinking when i'm helping them :D

Bestbuy mus be teh bestest store to be a Head Technishon for... you don't even has to has good grammer on your resoomay to get a job ther!

Funionz, if you don't want to build your own machine because you're intimidated by it... it's okay. Fear not. This is THE PLACE to get any of your questions answered.

I taught myself how to build a PC in 3 months just by looming around these forums and asking questions. You're much better off building your own than buying retail store junk.

Anyone here in the AT forums is going to highly recommend building your own PC. Good luck with getting credible advice for buying retail PCs in this forum... that kind of talk is forbidden around here ;-)

Yeah, building it yourself would be the best bet if you want to game on it. But baring that, Dell would be a solid choice, and give you more bang for your buck (and better hardware) than HP or Sony.

Yeah, i've thought about building my own PC before, i've done alot of computer based stuff for about 5 years now, so i'm fairly experienced when it comes to hardware, the only thing I _havent_ done, is the whole process of putting the motherboard into the case and such, so I guess that would be the only part that "intimidates" me.

Well if thats the only part that scares you, go ahead and order the parts because putting the mobo in the case is so damned easy. I built my roommate a comp and had never put in a mobo, but all you do is follow a few simple directions, put in the screws and its ready to go. Plug and play ease, the CPU worked on its first boot up.

lol :D IMHO, building computers is the only way to get what you want. And if you buy from The Egg, if you have a bad part, you can just RMA it no prob.

Hmm, all my yelling and bad grammer seems to have gotten through to someone, haha, i feel better, I helped you more then anyone of these "feeling supporters" and you dont even know it. Anyways, good luck on your pc, and even you screw up, just remember you could have done a lot worst and bought a retail pc.

But yeah, Dell or some other smaller company such as ABS, Voodoo, Falcon NW, IBuyPower, etc are good.

Sony, HP, Compaq, Gateway, are all crap.

They are not crap. As I said before htey are not up to par with self built but they are not crap, except the sony and gateway. I have never had an experience with ABS or IBuyPower. But FalconNW, HP, Compaq(since they were bought by HP) and those types are not that bad. If you are looking for value then go there way. They are not the best way to look for the best perfomance but you are way over stating it with the generalization that they are just crap.

And insulting someones nationality is not the best way to start your posts if you expect someone to take it seriously.

I've editted my first post, to reflect my views.

Anyway, Falcon NW is by no means a "value" kind of company, they're very much comparable to Alienware, just everyone likes them better ;)

Don't buy that comp either. Build your own. I've only built 4 computers and my first one I had no clue on. All I did was post on BB's and ask them what parts I should get. Ordered the setup from newegg, opened up the mobo manual and it told me where to plug every single plug, card, etc. It's really that simple, trust me.
