Sony TZ memory upgrade question

I ordered a Sony TZ notebook that came with 1x1GB DDR2-533. The spec says it's upgradeable to 2GB. Basically I have 2 questions:

1. Can I add DDR2-667 memory to mix with the existing DDR2-533?
2. Would I be able to add a 2GB module for a total of 3GB (1GB+2GB)?

Thanks!

But... it might not!

I had a problem with running the 667MHz memory at 533MHz, so there might be a problem

Why don't you just get that:

~$60. 2 GB kit

sometimes though, the factory installed module is sodered in, making removal inpossible. OP, you neeed to open your memory bay, check, and order accordingly.

??????????

RAM soldered in? Never heard of that.

But I did overlook the fact that OP already has a 1GB module.

It would probably be more economical to get a single 533MHz stick then, unless 2 matching modules are required for dual channel operation.

It obviously doesn't run in dual channel now, but if it can, it would mean additional performance improvement.

I that that at the very least, Apple used to solder RAM into the system. The old iBooks would ship with say, 256MB RAM onboard, and only 1 RAM slot empty

FYI my old Sony S460 shipped with 2x512MB SODIMMs to upgrading to 2GB required replacement of both DIMMs. Are you sure you have an open DIMM slot at all?

The spec says it comes with 1x1GB so it has to have one open DIMM slot. Sony is ridiculous to charge $300 more for the exact TZ model with 2GB of ram, while a GB of additional ram cost < $40. The reason I ask about ddr2-667 is because all the good deals at my local frys are ddr2-667.

anyway fedex is screwing up. I was supposed to get the laptop yesterday, and I was working from home the whole day and I didn't hear a knock, and the fedex tracking said "customer not available". The rep told me it should be delivered by noon todaym and it's past 3 and i'm still waiting.

Isn't that Patriot memory I linked to above available at your local FRY's...? Or is it just on-line...?

finally i got my laptop. it's really small and light, and the screen is gorgeous, battery life is excellent too. anyway there is only one memory slot and it's already occupied. Then I checked the spec of the TZ model with 2GB ram and it states 1x2GB, confirms me that it has only one dimm slot. That means I'll need to buy a single 2GB module to replace the existing 1GB module. Still a lot cheaper than getting the 2GB model (yeah and Sony website sells a 2GB so-dimm for $600, I pity anyone who falls for that).

Honestly, I think it is outrageous to equip the laptop with a single memory slot only.

That's how the manufacturers cut costs at your expense.

OP - I hope you knew about it, or if it was me, I would be returning the laptop.

Hope you are happy with it otherwise, though.

Say what? That's a $2400.00 machine. I guess when you gotta have the best specs in an uber small unit, they have to leave a little out.

See, I did not even realize that it was THAT expensive.

Well, I would never buy it at this price, especially with only 1 RAM slot.

But I hope the OP is satisfied. Let me check the other specs out of curiosity...

UPDATE: That's quite an expensive toy, I tell ya...
And nothing but a toy...

well it's around $2100 with $100 sony card credit (I missed the $150 offer) and $200 worth of Sony point credit for the purchase. you do have to pay extra ultra portables. Yeah I can't deny the toy part of it, but it's more practical for traveling, and it's a convenience that I would pay for.

anyway I bought a single OCZ 2GB DDR2-667 module from fry's for $89 AR and it works. I put its 1GB in my S560. So far I'm very pleased with it, the 11.1" 16:9 LED screen is so beautiful, dvd videos look like HD. It's so small and light, and I get over 4 hrs on its standard battery (my S560 gets about 1.5 hrs). It'll be perfect for my trip to Japan later this year.

Great!

Sounds like it is exactly what you need. And you found the appropriate RAM at Fry's, too.

Have a great trip to Japan!
