There's no question that gaming on the Android platform has heretofore been relatively underwhelming, but that looks like it's all about to change. It seems that Sony Ericsson -- a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device -- is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google's mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we've got the goods on it.

Looks really cool and you would be able to play REAL games properly on it with a proper d-pad and buttons.

It will be gimped, one way or another. I fail to see Sony freely licensing any of their hardware APIs to third party developers, and 1st party software is going to suck if it's going to be a "layer" on top of Android because Sony will be too afraid of piracy to let anything useful out the door.

Finally someone introduced something new to the smartphone market.
There is so much potential in the cell phone gaming market and noone have really produced a proper controller for it.
If Sony is able to make one not so bulky, I'm buying.

This is definitely something I've been wanting for a while but didn't think it would be too likely to come out. Android phone with a slideout keyboard that is in a game controller configuration is really cool. Even if it offered nothing new as far as exclusive and new games goes, just being able to control current games that much better would be worth it.

This could be epic, but I'm sure people will moan and cry foul when they can't root it or when they do it automatically destroys all their game data.

if sony does this right, android/google will pretty much win the phone wars.

I'm impressed that Sony is willing to "man-up" and use someone else's software. I would expect it to be a highly modified version of Android though (possibly without market support even), or at least a "game mode" that would shut down other background processes.

I just don't see Sony making anything that works that well.

Google would be better off getting some really good game designers to develop for the marketplace, the Android/Sony phone will be too much of a niche product to help the Android platform.

Except each one of their game consoles, TVs, and pretty much all else.

Sony electronics are excellent, but I have never used an Ericsson. If this is however based off of the PSP, I'm very excited.

Sony won't want to dilute the Playstation brand, so they won't brand it such unless it works well.

I could care less about the marketplace. All I like about this is the built in controller.

Hell it would probably handle the SNES emulator even better. Controls are the only reason I don't use it on my phone.

I had my friend buy xSNES or whatever the emulator was called, then got him some roms, but we didn't really get to play it. The controls that I did see looked real weird though, and yeah, this phone would solve that. But I'd honestly love a PSX emulator that works well on Android, whether or not I have this phone, and I think if this phone does well that it will give a few more options for developers when creating games...for example if it is Sony branded, they might actually help developers like they do for PSN. Maybe.

I have the EVO, and the on-screen controls on the SNES emulators I tried were all lacking. You need that feel of the d-pad under you finger for most of the old snes games. As for PSX I would settle for a functional PS3 controller working with it, but Sony had to go and make the tethering process convoluted enough that it will be tricky at best to implement (I think someone got it running on Symbian or Maemo).

Hell yes! It's about time someone had such an idea! And because it's Android, it can probably be hacked to run emulators, homebrew, etc. Hopefully it will have some sort of 3d capapbility too.
