This receiver does this after about 15-20 minutes or so with nothing hooked up! I have traumatic brain damage from a car accident 20 years ago and I only have a screw driver set I think I can borrow an ohm meter if there's simple tests I could do to help? I rest my hand on the top vents looking for real hot areas all I found was 1 area that was warm Can anyone reply some ideas of what I could do to keep the protect mode away!!!!! Please help me out the cheap way! :)

thats the problem
if its going into protect with nothing plugged in its most likely an internal issue
given the age, any fix could cost more than a new one
it could be bad caps, power supply, ect

the only way to know is open it up and see whats wrong

to do that you need to know something about electronics

I wonder if this D611 can reset the defaults it uses? I know some other models in the STR line one can. Can anyone tell me if this is so? And if it can be done on the D611 how is it done? I want to use this STR-D611 as a preamp for a power amp I have that's a Kenwood KM106 to power my 4 speakers this protect is a drag! Any ideas on weather or not I can do this?

If you are intending to repair it yourself just be careful with any large caps around the PSU portion. Id take it apart inspect for obviously damaged caps and components see if anything is obvious and go from there. It could be as simple as a few blown caps. Or a obvious short.
