crazy8,
It will work. Get the GST 1, and the SONY Serial Version. $45 + $8 for the Sony Serial GPS. Still cheaper than my Rand McNally. You might be able to find the GST-1 cheaper.

Read the FAQ, all kinds of good information on the Palm and Rockwell based GPS.

And here is a for the Palm. No pricing though.Software Solution

I just talked with a tech support guy at Sony SkyMap company...good info

The Serial version will only work with their software...it is proprietary.

The PCMCIA version is NEMA 08131 compliant....this is the standarad that like 90% of the GPS units use.

Accuracly is about 40ft in cities, and around 160ft in rural areas....

The montly service is ONLY if you want traffic accident / construction info....AND you need to have a connection to the internet to use this...

To add to the confusion.. :)
I've already stated that the Serial Version used the Binary Rockwell format, but you're still Not Limited to Sony Software with the serial version.

Rand McNally supports the serial version.
The converter I listed below will let you use it with Any NEMA software.

I guess the other thread wasn't good enough.

Is the CD come with the kit or not? I know there are cheap GPS, but they'll screw you later with the price of the map.
If it comes with the map, is that easy to update?

Summary Time:

Serial Version
Not NEMA Compliant Out of the Box.
You can Only use the Sony ETAK software (which it comes with)
Or Rand McNally
If you get the converter, then you can use any NEMA compliant Mapping software

PC Card Version
NEMA compliant but only works with Windows 98/95 maybe ME?
Comes with its Own Sony Etak Mapping software
You can use other NEMA software Like MS Streets (with some work.. again, see the original thread)

The serial version requires two connections ... serial and PS2 for power. The serial version is also the only version that was supposed to have a rebate. I was told they were not honoring the other but I saw a few posts to the contrary.
