Pulled from... A bargain site.

Sony Skymap 2000 Software is $83.11 at Onvia. Use $75 Rebate to bring it down to $8.11.

Western Digital 45 gig is $189.99 @ CompUSA and has a rebate of $90.00. BestBuy has the same drive (regular price) for $129.99. PriceMatch at CompUSA (bring your local BestBuy's phone #) and you can still send in the rebate. Grand total of $39.99

Sweet...

What is the Sony Skymap 2000 for? I usually buy anything Sony, but I don't think I really have a need for this?

It's not a standalone "GPS UNIT" but rather a device that hooks into your laptop. Probably a PCMCIA GPS card and a headset/mic.

Here is some info....
SkyMap 2000 GPS is the ultimate GPS-guided, voice-activated mapping system, complete with an Etak ear/mike for easier on the road use. SkyMap turns your notebook into a powerful travel tool with over 1 million points-of-interest, a user-created Address Book for contacts and locations, over 6.5 million miles of roads covering all 50 states and drawing tools to customize your printed maps and driving directions. SkyMap 2000 GPS features a sensitive 12-channel GPS receiver, coast-to-coast, door-to-door route planning, nationwide real-time traffic reports, and a searchable address-finding database. Wonder if it?s raining in Boston? Check out the real-time weather reports. Setup one or many address books for contacts or locations. SkyMap also lets you get mobile by connecting and downloading maps to your Palm Professional, Palm III or Palm V connected organizers. With SkyMap 2000 GPS, the sky is no longer the limit...

Correction: The GPS unit attaches to your Serial Port.
Here is a link from the Skymap site.

Another Correction: There is a PCMCIA version as well....

Hmm sounds pretty sweet for laptop users. I think I'm gonna take advantage of the hard drive deal personally, that is, if CompUSA has any left from their original supply of 2 (usually the case)

Onvia has jumped the price up to $166. PCWonder has it for $79, though...Check the link MisterPotatHead posted. Even better deal through them :)

I stared at the Skymap offer awhile, and concluded:
- it's a roadmap / weather / traffic advisory package
- it comes in two forms:
w/o GPS, you type in the locale you want info/maps on;
with GPS, you have the option of typing or using GPS;
the $8 reference appeared to me to offer the GPS version.
- it's goal is to lure you into yet another monthly Service:
you get an introductory interval for weather/traffic
reports, then you have to buy into continued access.

It could be of value to truckers, but it's of no value to me.
The GPS seemed incidental to the informational services, but
perhaps I misread the details, perhaps it could be used outside
the s/w package.

So it has a monthly fee? Figures.

Here...pay a little for this item, but end up paying over $100/yr to use it.....

I checked their website...didn't see anything about fees. Tried calling them, but they are closed today in honor of Chris-C.

Correction: Found some info on the site...."A 30-day free trial period allows all SkyMap users to experience the convenience of real-time traffic and weather reports. After the free trial period, subscriptions are available through the Internet for durations of six months, 12 months or two years."

Does CompUSA pricematch online or just B&M and is this true of Staples etc.. also?

That 45G would be a deal if I could work it out online but there isn't a CompUSA near where I live. The nearest is 75 miles away.

Can you get that rebate online or do you have to pick it up at the store?

I think you can get the rebate online, but you definitely have to PM in the store. Staples has to be over the phone too. (or in the store, if you have one)

Argh! No offense man but both of these are current hot threads on anandtech right here (within the top 40). Anway...

The Sony deal is good - you get the PCMCIA card that can output NMEA (or something almost NMEA, see the huge thread on this deal right here in this forum) for $8. You can use this card with anything that supports NMEA (least that is how it is supposed to work, again, see the thread barebottoms linked above). The other Sony kit is one that connects to the serial port - it sucks, don't get it, only Sony/Rockwell proprietary output supported, not NMEA. Then there is the software for something like $40 w/o any deals (needless to say, don't get it, get the PCMCIA deal for $8).

The hard drive thread is right in here too and unfortunately it is too late for it if you didn't get one today. All the CompUSAs I tried were out too so I got skunked! hehe...

Yeah, guess that thread title was never updated, hehe... Sorry for being a little too picky tonight. Just pissed off I spent way too much time (4+ hours) trying to get a Western Digital drive. But it was worth it with the other stuff I wanted at CompUSA. Least I keep telling myself that :).

Definately a good idea to post it again for $8. Run to it folks!

OK, forgive me for being a dumba**, but I need some clarification on this deal.

What are we buying? (a gps, software, neither?)

Is there a monthly fee to use the gps? (if that's what it is)

Does it work well?

I have been looking for a GPS that I can connect to my laptop for some time now. Would this be good to get?

1) You get a GPS PCMCIA unit that you can put in your laptop for $8.

2) You get the Sony Skymap 2000 software.

3) You can subscribe to some optional traffic warning thingy that requires you to have wireless internet (like richochet or whatever) but you don't have too!

4) The GPS PCMCIA unit included supports NMEA. NMEA is a standard for the output of GPS coordinates. This means you can use this unit with any software that supports NMEA (everything except proprietary software).

5) The only bad thing is that this card doesn't support NMEA 2.0 and it might not work with Microsoft Streets & Trips (software like the Sony software above that can be brought at CompUSA and other places for cheap - CompUSA price is $24.99 - $20 MS rebate). Please see the thread linked above for complete details on the conflict. It looks like we have it licked though.

6) You are getting a GPS unit for your laptop for $8 shipped! What are you waiting for! :)

Crazy8, no this one won't. If you look for a NEMA compliant serial GPS then it will. Wait Until CompUSA has the LAPTOP version of Rand McNally on sale. I picked one up for $70 bucks last time. It has a serial GPS and the Rand McNally Palm Software with it. Though it doesn't really say that on the box. From what I could tell, its the exact same thing as the Other Package with GPS they sell for $10 more.

Then just take a serial Hot Sync cable to connect it to the GPS. Or the Cradle. I like the Atlas software for the Palm. It can import any BMP to be your map file. You can find it at PalmGear.com.

If you're using a V series, the only way to get a serial cable is through the Travel Kit. I got mine from MobShop when they were still Accompany with the Coupons for $15, dont think you can do that anymore.

Then to power the unit, I took a 2 AA holder and attached a PS2 plug to it. Use that to connect to the PS2 power connector on the GPS. You can figure out the 2 pins you need by searching for PS2 pinouts on the net.

Even more Edit

Actually, I might have to take that back. If you get the Serial Port Version of the Sony Etak, you might be able to make it work with a Palm.

Even though the Sony Serial DOES NOT output NEMA sentences, from what I remember, it uses the Rockwell (Jupiter?) chipset. If that is correct, then its the same chipset the Delorme Unit uses. And if it is so, if you search the net, there is a guy that sells a translator from this Binary Format to NEMA sentences.

Its just a dongle like device. He wrote a PIC micro controller translator. It goes inline with the serial connector to translate the Delorme Binary Format to NEMA format. Its only about $20. If you can find it, you might email him and ask if it will work with the Sony Etak.
