Sony sets date for rollout of Blu-Ray DVDs

Could this mean that the PS3 delay is just a rumor? This was supposed to be the problem to hold back the PS3.

Sony sets date for rollout of Blu-Ray DVDs
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Sony Pictures said Tuesday that it aims to deliver its new Blu-ray DVD format to U.S. stores May 23 to coincide with the introduction of compatible disc players, a new step in an industry war for control of home movie viewing.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment will first release eight Blu-ray titles, followed by another eight in mid-June. The first movie titles include "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch" and "House of Flying Daggers."

Blu-ray is locked in a multibillion-dollar standards war against a rival DVD format known as HD DVD. The technology companies supporting HD DVD, championed by Toshiba, plan to start rolling out movie titles and disc players in March.

Each side hopes to reignite a sagging $24 billion home video market with new players and discs that offer greater capacity and interactive features.

Sony Pictures, a division of Japan's Sony Corp. (SNE), earlier this month disclosed pricing for Blu-ray format discs which amounts to a premium of about 15% to 20% to the current DVD standard.

The company said Tuesday that its target delivery date would coincide with the launch that day of the first commercially available Blu-ray disc player by Samsung Electronics. Other Blu-ray disc players are scheduled for release to market from Sony and Pioneer.

Well, only one Blu-Ray player is going to be available at launch and it will cost $1000+.....

I heard $1000 also but heard $200 for a reader and $500 for a burner. All prices I heard are rumor though.

Sad, Toshiba's 499 HD-DVD is looking very nice at that pricing point. No, I don't think the PS3 delay is just rumor, they may be able to pull a May-June for Japan but at this point I highly doubt it, US no earlier then fall from everything I've read.

Reportedly, Sony has yet to work out anything with any of the retail channels. That definitely screams delay.

That's one thing I'd like to know, is if these new HD-DVD and Bluray players will be backwards compatible with DVD's as we know them today. I'd imagine they would be, but you never know with Sony of the other multi-million dollar companies out there.

I believe they are supposed to be backwards compatible. I won't be spending any money on them though until players get down to $150 or less though and either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray prove themselves to be the winner.

I know the Toshiba 499 player is BC. I believe the blue ray players will be as well, but not sure.

Toshiba HD-A1

WTF kind of movies are those to release off the bat?.. 50 First Dates?? Are you kidding me?? I can at least understand the craptacular 5th Element being put out for the eye candy.

Ha... I bet George Lucas is sitting in his basement revamping the entire Star Wars episodes to be high-def with 50 gazillion changes (enhancements)....

I'm happy with my HTPC with FFDSHOW on my 50" DLP
These HD-DVD's and BluRay discs would have to do the following before I adopt:

1) Have one standard format or clear winner
2) Allow the disc to be backed up (archived)
3) Cost under $200 for a player

Until then, screw it... I'll wait on the sidelines and watch as all the early adopters of HDTV's kick the shiat out of their BluRay/HD-DVD players that require newer monitors/sets and than I'll wait to see the ppl who adopted HD/BD Discs early kick themselves when one format gets dropped and loses to the other.

Don't forget that your HDTV or video card and monitor has to have HDCP in order for you to watch a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc. It will either be downsampled to something like 540p or not play at all if you don't (up to the publisher).

Thus, you will need DVI or HDMI as ign spells out here;

Hollywood screws 3 million HDTV owners, sucks in general.

Thankfully, my Sammy has both, sucks for the component guys/gals.

Which is still truely the gayest thing Ive ever heard. I'm one of them...I've got a beautiful 34inch crt sony wega CRT - and I'm not even going to be able to use HD-DVD or Blu-ray because I don't have HDMI. I'm aware that the entire industry is in on this together, but it doesnt make it any less retarded.

The only thing Ive learned from this experience is not to trust the companies. If anything, even if I did have HDMI, I should assume that something will change 2-3 years later with HD-DVD that will make my original purchase completely obsolete and unusable.

When are they going to learn that no amount of protection they tack on will ever defeat the hackers? They never have stopped them before, and they never will. Give it a year max, and people will be ripping HD-DVDs just like we're been ripping DVDs for years.

For both Blue-ray and HD DVD of course.

With two formats I'm not that excited. I'll still buy DVDs until there is a clear winner and they replace DVDs. Also if/when this happens I'll still hold on until players are under $200/$250.

I wonder if they (Hollywood Studios) are just pushing another "Laser Disc" fiasco on the general consumer. LD's had higher Picture Quality and Audio, however due to the problems with them it eventually failed to a sub-par format in terms of PQ/Audio... the VHS cassette.

You would think they would have learned but apparently not... I hope this scheme of theirs fails miserably and that DVD's continue to hold strong for another 7-10 yrs.. or until HDDVDs/BD change the way we can view them.. via component and the ability to back them up.

Who cares? Its Sony. I'm never buying another item from Sony again. I hope the PS3 fails & they lose millions.
