Well it looks as though Sony finally updated the S Series (the customizable VGN-S380) to include the Sonoma Pentium M, the 915PM Alviso chipset, and the Geforce Go 6200 TC. They've at least included DDR2 on this one, but it's still only 400 MHz (I can't understand why they wouldn't at least give the option for 533 so the FSB and memory could run at 1:1). Does anyone else find it extremely annoying/shady that Sony only offers the Xbrite LCD with the expensive and rather useless Intel 2915 wireless adapter (who uses 802.11a?)? They pull the same sh*t with the FS series (you can only upgrade to the Geforce 6200 TC if you select 512MB of memory and the Intel 2915 wireless adapter). I love their laptops especially because of their Xbrite LCD's and their Geforce Go 6200 TC offering, but tying specific options like that to overpriced and useless options like the 2915 adapter and overpriced OEM memory is just ridiculous.

(A) All memory from the manufacturer is overpriced.
(B) A lot more people are using 802.11a in their homes where interference is a bigger problem than range. Not to mention businesses use it to keep wifi within the confines of their building.
(C) Yes, it sucks that they make you do this. However, Sony and Dell are the only ones who I have personally seen do this. Sony's are nice, but overpriced. Dell's are okay, but cheaper than most (when you find one of the many deals).

Thus is the way of life with laptops ;)
