Yet another remote deal. Compgeeks has just lowered the price on the Sony RM-VL1000 universal remote to $39.95 (Link). Ground shipping will run about $6 so delivered cost is approximately $46, making this an excellent value. As a point of comparison, Best Buy currently sells this remote for $79.99.

I will readily acknowledge that the unit has its own warts and quirky ergonomics, just like every other ?universal remote? I have ever used, but I am unaware of any other remote available that approaches its features and flexibility at this price. To find something equivalent or better, you are looking at a $100+.

What I really like about the Sony is that for each of the twelve devices it can control, it can learn 12 customized commands complete with customized text labels which are displayed on the dot matrix LCD panel. This is in addition to the ability to use preset codes or to ?relearn? any other key for that device on the standard keypad. In contrast, most universal remotes require you to remember what function you have learned to a key.

I also purchased the cool Radio Shack 15-2107 which created a lot of interest in this forum. Although the glowing touch screen on the RS has its own unique appeal, the Sony is the better of the two units. In my opinion, definitely worth the extra $13-$14.

I have had mine now for nearly three weeks so cannot comment yet on how durable the unit is, but the build quality seems to be above average. The learning curve was not bad but the setup was rather tedious when creating the customized labels and macros. However, now that it is completed, the effort was worthwhile. I finally have a single remote that can replace all the others.

Does it know about Sony's TIVO?
Yes. It lists a preset code for Sony Tivo. Even if it didn't, I would think you could learn all the commands into the remote, either assigning it to the regular keys or into the custom keys adjacent the dot matrix screen.

Here's the feature list:

Dot matrix LCD screen
180 virtual control keys with customizable labels
Controls up to 12 components
36 macro commands with up to 32 steps each
12 system control macros
12 component macros
12 timer macros
4 macro execution speeds
Factory preset power-off macros for all Sony components
One-touch access to favorite channel
Internal clock and weekly timer
12 timer macros schedule actions for automatic execution
Programmable 5-way joystick controller
Nearly 500 sets of non-Sony commands preset
Nearly 450 capacity for learning new commands
2 infrared LEDs high-powered emitter
Uses non-volatile memory to retain settings
Runs on two (2) AA sized batteries (not included)
32.8-foot approximate operating distance

Learning Capabilities:
Supports 300 bits long remote control signals
Supports 156kHz carrier frequency
Supports B & O
Compatible with infrared control signals for non-audio/video components

Nice post. $39.99 sure beats going to Best Buy and paying $80 - $100 for this remote.

Great! I figured if it didn't have it built in, I'd never get around to programming it and catch hell for yet another remote on the coffee table. Thanks for the reply--I'm ordering!
