Sony Rear Projection LCD, WTF??

Rear projection simply means that the image is projected onto the back of the viewing surface (rather than the front like a typical data projector setup).

The source of the image can be DLP, LCD, CRT, LCOS, any number of technologies that are then illuminated with an extremely bright light & the reflected image is what you see.

A LCD RPTV is a RPTV with an LCD as its image source.

You need to spend some time on avsforum, PG. LCD, DLP, and LCoS are all examples of digital imaging technology. LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display is a transmissive technology, just like LCoS, or Liquid Crystal on Silicon. This means light passes through a medium. DLP, or Digital Light Processing is a marketing name for DMD, or Digital Micromirror Device, which is a reflective technology--light is reflected of its mirrors.

None of these have anything to do with how a projected images is seen by your eyes, whether that be on a projection screen or on a fixed screen using a fresnel (sp) lens in rear-projection. Front projection vs. rear rpojection just means from what direction the imager is projecting the light from. And as DLP is a marketing name by TI for its DMD technology, D-ILA is JVC's marketing name for LCoS (Sony uses SXRD).
