What is with the rumors that some tapes can cause wear in the DV cam read/write head and some tapes don't last for more than couple of times?

Regarding Tape Resources: Tape Resources charges $4.79 for the same tape that TapeStockOnline.com charges $4.69 each for one, $4.65 each for 10 or more, $4.60 each for 15 or more, and $4.53 each for 20 or more. Also, Tape Resources charges a $2 handling charge per order and TapeStockOnline.com doesn't.

Regarding switching brands of Mini DV tape: Don't frequently switch back and forth between Sony and Panasonic tapes. One brand uses particulate lubricants and the other uses liquid lubricants. If you mix them you get... mud. Sticky oily mud.

Regarding using Mini DV tapes multiple times: I wouldn't recommend it. Dust accumulates on the tape and you have more and more dropouts. Mini DV has a tiny tape width and isn't what I would call durable. To give you a somewhat exagerated example: Mini DV is intended to give excellent quality pictures when used in a camcorder where you are recording a significant event in your family's life but was never intended for repetitive viewing of Barney sing-along videos and wouldn't hold up to the task. If you intend to watch your family videos over and over, dub them to VHS, view them on VHS and make new VHS dubs from the Mini DV originals when the VHS tapes wear out. At $4.69 per tape, you shouldn't be re-using them for camera shooting either.

wabwab: I'm considering puchasing a few tapes from your site, and I was curious as to how fast you can ship it out? If I order Monday morning, can you ship it the same day? Also, what kind of shipping do you use? Thanks in advance. ;) (I need the tapes on or before this Friday. ;) )

For shipping, our web site goes to the UPS web site and gets a real-time quote based on the zip codes and package weights. This quote is added to the order form (again in real-time) and this is what we charge the customer. There are no additional charges or handling fees but if you are in California the web site will also show you what the sales tax charges are.

I'd suggest you put in a sample order for what you need and let our web site give you a shipping quote. It will give you an exact quote before it even asks for your credit card number. You can even use your browser's back button to select a different form of shipping and get a quote for that too. Once you get a shipping method that you like, you can put your credit card number in and proceed with your order.

We have a UPS pickup at the warehouse every weekday afternoon and about 95% of the orders get shipped the same day (or on Monday if they were placed over the weekend). Mondays are really hectic (with all the weekend orders) so we usually take care of all the overnight, 2-day and 3-day orders first and some of the standard ground orders might wait till Tuesday to go out if there are an unusually large number of orders over the weekend. Also once-in-a-while we get multiple huge orders for some particular items over the course of a couple days and may run out of something unexpectedly. If that happens, we always notify the customer immediately and we can usually work something out if the timing of their order is crucial.

Thanks for your interest, and I know you won't be dissapointed.

Regards,

Thanks wabwab. ;) I already ordered last night with 2nd Day Air shipping, and Judy sent a confirmation email. ;) Hopefully they get here by the time I need them. ;)

Btw, which miniDV tapes (out of the ones you sell) do you consider to the be the highest quality? Just curious, thanks! :)

wabwab.....can you tell me which of these 2 hi8 tapes you sell would be the best?
Sony P6120HMP 120 Minute Hi8 MP
TDK P6-120MP 120 Minute Hi-8
thanks!

edit: also, i'm wondering if the do-not-use-multiple-times for the dv tapes also applies to hi8 tapes

I'd consider the Sony EX to be the best, but I personally use the PR (cheaper and good enough). Lots of people swear by the Panasonic EJ or EK too. I've only used the Panasonic a few times and didn't have any trouble. I've heard of a couple people being dissapointed with the Panasonic PQ, but I never heard any specifics. Thanks for your order and happy shooting.

Regarding the Hi-8: I'd go for the Sony over the TDK. I have to admit, I just generally believe in Sony first. Specific to these two models, I'd say their quality is probably about equal, but if it were me I'd buy the Sony.

Regarding Hi-8 multi-use: Although larger than Mini DV, 8mm is still a pretty narrow piece of tape, and Hi-8 doesn't have error correction to compensate for some small dropouts, like Mini DV does. I've heard complaints of lots of dropouts on Hi-8 for years. I tell you what makes a lot of sense to me is Sony's Digital8 format. It uses the same DV data stream of Mini DV, but records it on the larger 8mm format tapes. My prediction is that Digital8 will hold up better to repeated use than either Hi-8 or Mini DV. And when you consider that a $3.33 Sony 120 minute Hi-8 tape yields 60 minutes of Digital8 recording for less than the cost of a 60 minute Mini DV tape, that's a cool thing. Also, Digital8 cameras tend to be cheaper than Mini DV cameras, but still have a firewire port for DV output.

Regarding cleaning tapes: No, we don't carry cleaning tapes. The problem is, everybody only need one cleaning tape so there isn't enough volume for us to be competitive. I'd suggest you buy your cleaning tape wherever you bought your camera.

Yeah, but if he's got prices this good, who's to complain?

Dude, if you say the Sony and Panasonic tapes use different lubes, what does the TDK use?

[Edit] Or Fuji, for that matter?

I haven't forgotten your question about the types of lubrication, I'm working on finding the answer. No one seems to know so I think I'm just going to crack one of each open and look for myself.

I've been ordering from taperesources.com for a few years and they've never charged me any handling fees. They also ship MiniDV stock overnight for about $6.00 or so - or at least they did last time I ordered. ALSO, they give you 5% off your order if they're out of stock on anything.

Wish I found about about this 2 weeks ago before I ordered from your site. I wanted to see the difference between the sony and panasonic so I bought 6 of each.

Anyway, I've been mostly using TDK and Fuji (depending what's currently on sale at Costco) for the past year. It would be great if you find out the type of lubricant that they use so I'd know which one to keep and which one to junk (panasonic or Sony) from the tapes I just ordered from you.

I just did a price quote on 10 of these sony pr's from both sites.

Taperesources.com is cheaper. It makes me wonder. Taperesources charges .50 over ups ground for 2 day air and their shipping is only $8.xx and Tapestockonline.com claims that they dont' add a handling fee, yet they are $11.xx for the same method of shipping? I think someone is lying!

Same tapes and 2 day air are cheaper! They have my money!

I've been using the Panasonic AY-DVM60EL with the IC memory. It seems to work ok.

Lying? Don't take MSUman's word for it, go look at the links and see for yourself:
Tape Resources Handling Charge
UPS Rate Calculator (use 91605 as the origin zip code and 10 Mini DVs weight one pound)
Tape Resources Sony Mini DV 60 PR for $4.79 each
TapeStockOnline.com Sony Mini DV 60 PR for $4.69 each

Sales Tax: I don't know where you live but if you live in California you'd pay sales tax at TapeStockOnline.com but you wouldn't need to pay sales tax at Tape Resources. If you live in Virginia you shoule pay sales tax at Tape Resources but not at TapeStockOnline.com. That's just a fact about how sales tax works on mail order businesses.

Shipping Costs: UPS charges fall into zones, which are relative to distance. If you live on the east coast UPS charges should be less from Tape Resources but if you live on the west coast UPS charges should be cheaper from TapeStockOnline.com. Also, I have never said anything about what Tape Resources charges for shipping. I don't know how their web site generates its shipping rates and I don't know if they charge more or less for shipping than UPS does. I've never made any claims that our shipping will be more or less than any other specific site, I've just said that we get our shipping quotes directly from the UPS shipping calculator that UPS publishes on the web (see the link above) and we don't add anything to what they quote.

In the future, please try to check your facts before you make an accusation that someone is lying!

Oh, and another thing, Tape Resources only offers a quantity discount (down to $4.69) if you order 100 Sony Mini DV tapes but TapeStockOnline.com goes as low as $4.53 for as few as 20 tapes and has price breaks for 10 and 15 tapes too. See the first message at the top of the posting.

Can you please let me know how the 'Panasonic 83 Minute Professional Mini DV' tapes differs from the 'Panasonic 80 Minute Mini DV' tapes? I always pay extra for the additional time per cassette but have not heard any info the 'Pro' tapes.

BTW, I normally record in LP mode, and will be trying the eSP and eLP modes on my Canon zr30 to achieve 4 hours on one tape. Which tape would be better in this circumstance?

Thanks in advance

Wabwab,

Is there any actual difference between the TDK Red and Green tapes you sell and the ones in the gold packaging that Costco sells?

What do you reccommend for archiving Mini-DV tapes to SVHS on a Philips VR1010BP? High grade VHS or actual SVHS? I would like to use the SVHS-ET feature with regular VHS tapes so I can also play them on my upstairs VCR that has SQPB.
