The proviso is for new (wink) customers 20% off. I think this is a great price for a recordable unit. Sony is probably making room for newer units and it isn't as fancy as some of their other units, but it's a sony --- NUFF said!

It looks like the link that you posted is timed out...
is the coupon for just the mercata site or one of it's branded stores?

I bought this recorder a while back, and ended up returning it to best buy. It is not made as strong as other models, and does not have a display on the remote. However, I paid more than $100 at the time, so it still sounds like a good deal to me. Just be sure to read the reviews on it before purchasing, as it leaves a lot to be desired (compared with more expensive models).

Why in the world would anyone pay money for an MD player. The music is not genuine CD quality, why not just stick with MP3. Cheaper and more popular (hence more music).

knocks, you dont really know what you are talking about.

mp3 is not cheaper, minidisc is. you can buy 80 minute blanks for $2 and less, the sound quality is better than 192kbps mp3, and best of all, all the music you want for less price than a mp3 player. also, minidisc can record anything, so i dont know what you are talking about when you say "more popular (more music)" are you aware that a md can record mp3s too? and cds? and anthing that makes noise?

This is a very old model. Current top of the line sony md recorder is the MZR-90/91, which goes for around 300 bucks and is only slightly larger than a mini disc in its case. The MZR 37 is about the size of thin walkman.

what gosharks said and you can record straight from a cd making the music purely digital and in the same clarity/sound quality as the cd you recorded off of.

In order to do digital cd to md recording you need to buy an optical cable which will set you back about 20 bucks and your audio equipment has to have digital/optical out. Doesnt seem to be too common a feature although it is also in sony's high end Discmans.

Digital IN .... It's very rare to find a portable unit with digital out. The only unit I am aware of is the first SOny minidisc portable (MZ-1).

I have a portable MD player recorder (not this model) as well as a Sony car stereo MD player. They're great little units. You'd be surprised at how many stereos components now are carrying an optical digital out. My Sony stereo unit (MC1), a 1 piece job that I received as part of a Marlboro Miles promotion, has a 50 CD changer and an optical digital out, making my recordings from CD to MD completely digital. Also, my Aureal SQ2500 soundcard has an optical out, making my MP3 to MD recordings completely digital. I also know some people who have taken their portable unit to clubs that feature live music and asked the sound guy to do a boot right from the mixer board. No problems usually, especially if you have your own patch cables. Blanks are now down to the $2 range at your local Best Buy (5 for $10 reg price).

I think he meant mp3 music, not data... but correct me if i'm wrong. In fact, before they came out with the portable mp3 -cd player like the expanium, I was wondering why no one was making a MD-mp3 player. It would be awesome. I don't know how much exactly, but i think i've seen it somewhere that MD can store around 400 MB of data. If that's the case, $2 mini disc sounds good for the amount of mp3's it can store. :)
