Sony Optiarc 7240S - $19.99 shipped at Newegg (superb dual layer burner)

ive always avoided this one. a lot of them are defective and some of them need a firmware upgrade to load win 7. also the bezel isnt black, its actually a dark gray color, so it doesnt match case colors. pioneer and lg are better in my opinion

Really? I bought one of these a week ago and it works fine for my win 7 x64 machine. The black color matches my black case perfectly.

A lot of them defective? What do you mean by a lot? Newegg shows hardly any are defective. Out of 862 reviews, only 47 very poor. I would hardly call that "a lot"

i have a few of the 7241 and they have been flawless in windows 7. i bought them at 23$ shipped and still have a few extra burners in the cupboard so im fighting this good deal.

Good deal, I already ordered one after getting my newegg email. Don't know why I did that though, I haven't burned CD or DVD in about a year...

This is the closest candidate that can replace my BenQ DW1620 considering most of the other ones on the market nowadays are complete crap...I'll look more into it.

I haven't burnt a DVD in almost 2 years...Wonder if it's worth me spending $20 on this?
The only reason I have an IDE cable in my computer case is because of the BenQ.
I've been kicking myself for not buying the BenQ DW1640 SATA years ago.

I say just buy it. I've had BenQ 1620, 1640, and 1650, all IDE. BenQ drives and Plextor Premium were the reason I still had IDE in my PC. BenQ's are overrated. Sure they are good drives, but my last drive 1650 failed to burn dual layer MCC every single time I tried. At the same time cheap memorex drive (no idea of the actual manufacturer) wrote it perfectly. WTF? I used to update BenQ firmware religiously, but by then I got too tired of it and frustrated at what should have worked right out of the box so when Plextor Premium finally bit the bucket (I've seen it coming but couldn't do anything about it as Plextor refused to acknowledge the problem) I've finally ditched IDE and went with 7240. So far I've got no regrets. The biggest reason I didn't want to upgrade was because it seemed like most of the newer drives relied too much on Z-CLV and I wanted CLV/CAV drive. 7240 is mainly a CLV/CAV drive (with some minor Z-CLV thrown in between) so I got no regrets. It works fine, and I do not miss my BenQ and Plextor (will never buy Plextor drive again). The only hiccup with 7240 is that just before the tray opens I hear a "thud". I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be or if it's a sign of early tray failure, at $20 it's not really an issue as it's cheap to replace and I don't use DVD drive very often anyway.

The new 7240S I put into my friend's system does that as well. When the tray is opening, it seems to hesitate for a split second at the beginning before ejecting.

BenQ DW1620 and DW1640 are nowhere near overrated. They were the best during their time.
Maybe other BenQ models were overrated sure, but not those particular two.

It was after(or during???) the DW1650/1670 model that the company stopped using the Nexeperia chipset and started using Panasonic chipset crap which disabled QSuite, e.g Solidburn, Overspeed, QScan. PIE/PIF/POF/Jitter scanning wasn't supported as well which was absolutely ridiculous.
