I counter with this question. How many first party PS3 titles will support 1080p? If 1080p is a key selling point and should showcase the true hardware capabilities of the console, there should be quite a few 1080p titles on tap for release.
Honestly I don't know the answer. Do you? Just tell us. That would be something important to know for this discussion.
This is the best I could find:
http://ozymandias.com/archive/2006/08/1...etween-1080i-and-1080p-for-Movies.aspxThis is why I get hung up on the image encoding quality of HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray. That's where you're going to see a perceivable difference. As to games, 99% of PS3 titles will natively render at 720p; the few that come out with 1080"x" support are either going to be simple classic arcade ports that don't need to render complex scenes (think the original Battlezone), or will give up a lot of in-game visual effects and simply won't look very good (hence the poor showing of Gran Turismo "HD" at this past E3).
Well we are talking launch titles so I don't doubt it. Launch titles usually aren't very spectacular. Usually just remakes since there is no time for development for third partys and since noones gonna launch a console with just a couple of games.![]()

he screwed up. NBA Live '07 isn't even a launch title (thats EA property), NBA '07, however, is a SCEA game and a launch title.

yea James, there is the slight thing that GTHD is running on the PS2 engine, but simply is using higher-res textures and is running natively at 1080p. i wouldn't even buy the game, because its not new.

Randay...please admit you are a fanboy.
Both Sony and MS have 1080p support, yet Sony advertises how they are the only ones with it. Game developer working with Sony admits the hardware isn't good enough to run 1080p on Sony hardware. This won't change as time goes on, because the PS3 hardware will not change.
Sure, some games will work in 1080p, in the same way that my GeForce FX 5600 can run BF2 at highest resolutions and textures...if you don't mind getting 4 FPS.
PS3 can theoretically run games in 1080p, and it works with some games if they have relatively low on-screen content.

God damn! I didn't know that, but I'm damn sure that my GT4 looks no where like this.

Yes. GT4 is essentially the same game on the PS2, running in high res. It completely and utterly exemplifies what is wrong with 1080p on the PS3. Sure, 1080p can be done, as long as you're comfortable with your games looking like PS2 games.
Oh yeah, and it'll also *supposedly* cost $8000 if you want all the cars. If thats not horrifying, I don't know what is.

What are you talking about? Seriously, I've not heard this rumor.

The part about owning all the cars costing $8k is speculation since no one knows the plans of Polyphony / Sony in regards to how cars will be obtained and added to a players garage. For all we know, we may start with 500 cars in the game and then Sony will start charging fees for additional cars post release.

So even if Sony were to offer a memory upgrade in the future (sounds unlikely), it would deal with the memory capacity issue, but not the fillrate/bandwidth issue. It'd still be slower, although more feasible.

The thing about memory expansions is people don't want to spend MORE money just to be able to play a few games, and developers don't want to make a game that requires an accessory that many customers don't have. So you get a chicken and egg scenario. That's why "unique" controllers often aren't very popular.
