Sony Vaio laptop running Vista Home Premium.

Computer boots up to the log in screen and lets me log in and goes to the welcome screen. After the welcome screen the screen goes black with a mouse courser in the middle. I can move the courser around and every now and then the HD light blinks but the screen just stays blank. Same thing happens when I try and boot into safe mode as well. Laptop was running just fine up until two days ago when this started happening.

Could this possibly be a virus? If so Im guessing the only way to scan and repair the drive would be to take it out, put it into an external enclosure and scan it on another computer.

Other than a virus, any ideas?

Well I tried a number of things and I still have not fixed the problem.

I tried rolling back to two previous restore points but still had the same problem.
I tried running the built in hardware/software scan/repair program and nothing came up.
I did a factory restore and I still have the same problem.

The laptop will load into windows but all I get is a black screen and a mouse courser that I can move around. After doing the factory restore, once I booted up the computer, it got into windows and some first time setup windows popped up and started running but still with a black screen. Its like the computer is getting into windows but wont display it. I have never run into a problem like this before.
