Sony GRZ610 laptop
pentium 4 2.0Ghz (no mobile, i know)
256MB
ATI Radeon 7500C graphics
onboard everything else (obviously)
win xp home w/ sp2

so i booted it up. its slow as heck. its running at 268 mhz on AC, which was really surprising. i even took out the battery and the modular bay (combo drive - dvd reader/cd burner) and it still shuts off. im sure there is a virus somewhere, cause i installed kasperky (whatever its called) and it detects some. btu it again shuts off while scanning. safe mode doesnt even work sometimes, as it halts when it comes to agp440.sys. i have no idea what the problem is. do you guys have any ideas? btw my friend gave me this laptop to fix.

If all else fails, you'll need to reformat. That might work. If not, RMA to Sony perhaps?

use a xp home disc and boot to it, go into the recovery console and do a chkdsk /r, let that run, and try booting the machine into windows again, if no dice there, do a repair installation, if STILL no dice, try disabling speedstep in the cmos setup, cuz thats SLOW speed to use on a 2 ghz machine
