Sony Laptop Drivers needed

Just rebuilt a PCG-F580 Sony laptop with Windows XP. I can't get any video out of the external monitor connection.

Does anyone have video Drivers for this machine that work correctly under Windows XP???

Really need to get them any help appreciated.

I'm sure you have probably already done this but is the Laptop LCD screen itself working?

If so, are you pressing the "function + F5" or whatever it is for Sony laptops? Usually you have to toggle between LCD and External monitor.

Oh...you can always go here and do a search to see if they may have the drivers you need.

This is a hardware level function, drivers should be irrelevent. You can boot DOS and do it, try ITJunkie's instructions. Have you had this working in the past?

It did work before on 98SE.

I have pressed the function keys but it seems that is a driver function as well. Since rebuilding it none of the F key combinations work.

I think your wrong it is a driver function to put out the picture to the external. I have seen comments on other forums that you must have the correct driver loaded to make the external screen work.

Thanks for the link there are a couple of possible drivers on that site. I'll keep looking and testing and give feed back if I find something.

Sony has some special software that you need to install in 98se for the function keys to work. It is NOT a hardware level function on these laptops. I had the same problem with a Sony laptop I recently sold, the sound and brightness controls wouldn't work without the software. I found the software on the system restore cd. I don't have it anymore though, so if you find someone with the cd you should be able to get it to work.

Sony has never been very helpful in providing drivers and software on their website....

I haven't found Sony so helpful and of course the drivers I have on the recovery disk are for 98Se not XP.

I have got the external screen running now. I managed to find on the American FTP site the latest screen drivers for this laptop and now the external screen works. Not found the drivers for the function keys though.

There are a number of downloads (including a hotkey utility) here. I found them under the "Other O/S" section after selecting your notebook model.

You need the hotkey utility. On my laptop (V505dc2), it was only available on the recovery partition -- not anywhere else that I found. Sony does not distribute it. I was instructed to contact Sony for a recovery disc since I deleted that partition. Luckily, my company has more of the same laptop, and I was able to get one that had not yet been wiped out and I created recovery discs from that partition.

Also, I've found that the external monitor works without the Fn key if it is plugged in as the machine is booting up.

I think it also depends on the Sony shared library, which can be found at the same location. When I was looking for a solution for my laptop, I found several versions of the hotkey utility out there, and I couldn't find one that worked on my particular laptop. It's possible that the link that MrChad provided will work, but also be aware that it may be that some versions might not work on some machines.
