i have a sony sr5k. i recently had an accidental drop and after i tried to boot it back up, the computer turns on but the display is completely dark. i can still see the image on the lcd monitor but it is pitchblack like the backlight went out. what part could have gone wrong?

The backlight. Or the inverter board. Either is a pain to replace yourself...the drop could've just loosened the connections though (I doubt it, both are pretty fragile).

You could check ebay for a screen assembly for that model laptop that doesn't include the lcd, but does include a working inverter board and backlight.

i checked ebay and they did not have my model.

how does the backlight look and can it be replaced without replacing the whole lcd screen? i was under the assumption that the backlight is part of the lcd display. if you take a look at my model, the display is extremely thin.

start emailing/ringing some local and online laptop screen repairers. Get 10 quotes. Some will be the price of a new laptop. With the cheaper ones, make sure you know what you are getting

The backlight is a long thin tube light (cold cathode tube) that runs along the bottom of the LCD panel in almost all laptops. It is generally taped to the bottom of an LCD with silver reflective tape. It may also have some plastic fascia over it to hold it in place. You can replace it without replacing the whole screen if you are very careful removing the old one. This is a very advanced repair though, you may have to solder the tube's leads to the inverter board. The inverter board is a small circuit board, generally the size of a small cigarette lighter. It is generally mounted behind the lcd panel. If you are uncomfortable with this sort of repair AT ALL, find a repair shop to do it for you. As montag said, it will probably be very expensive though, and they may just want to replace the entire lcd assembly.
