There's a 60 inch Sony KDS-60A2000 being sold on Craigslist currently for 900 bucks. I told the guy he is insane and offered 700 bucks, and he hemmed and hawwed enough to be believable and then agreed. However, I wanted to run it by you folks first.
After doing exhaustive research (read: googling for 20 minutes) it appears that, when functional, this is a GREAT RPTV. However, it also appears that Sony ditched the format at least in part due to something called the "Green Blob" problem. Apparently some chip on the optical board can die, which causes green or yellow tinging to certain corners of the screen. The problem sometimes goes away after warming up, and sometimes does not.
So I've got the following pros and cons:
Pros:
- Excellent PQ (The guy says he got it calibrated by best buy, but even assuming that's BS it's excellent out of the box)
- 60 inch 1080p TV for 700 bucks. Almost enough said right there.
Cons:
- Apparently prone to failure (although how prone, I don't know)
- No 3D mode
- It's Craigslist
I figure I'm going to tell him I'll come look at it, but I want it hooked up and NOT TURNED ON RECENTLY so I can see it during warm-up. That's probably about the most I can do.
So anyone have an opinion? If there's a Sony SXRD-type RPTV owner out there who has had years of trouble-free operation from theirs, I'd especially love to hear that.
