This. Aside from analyzing a woman's pores on her crotch from those mulit-megapixel images, when have you actually even viewed an image above 4MP?
How about even 2MP?

Most pics on facebook barely scratch 1MP.

Lower megapixels on smaller sensors = better quality actually. Lower pixel density means higher dynamic range which means more vibrant and lifelike colors and highlights not being blown out.
So why does the Galaxy S4 have better pictures than the HTC One in daylight then?
I await your adequate explanation.

Not always. The S4 takes noticeably better pictures than the One, and the resolution allows you to crop things down to exactly what you want during editing, since phones don't have optical zoom.

As with all things, it's a compromise. Often, having extra resolution is a good compromise, sometimes it's not.

Hmmm not sure where you guys are seeing that. I just looked up a few comparisons, the Galaxy S4 does look sharper in a lot of the pictures. But the HTC One clearly has better colors. Low DR tends to wash out the image.

Also for low light, the One totally blows away the S4.

Here the One is on the top and the S4 is on the bottom.

I use them both constantly.

How have your S4 and One pictures turned out?

And was the pic stolen from Geddy Lee's son?

If you ever thought to yourself, "Man, the Xperia Z is way too small", I guess the Ultra would be good for you.

OK, I've mentally committed myself to this monster. I need to put my money where my mouth is. It'll get rid of several phones, a Kindle, and an iPad I carry around. Now, I need figure out the critical accessory for this and I'm good.

8MP is low for a camera compared to the Ultrapixel or Gigapixel the HTC one has.

It's fine considering what people will really use it for (social media, taking up space on the computer and phone's HDDs). If you connect your phone to your tv, it'll match exactly the megapixel of new 4K TVs. Finally, SONY is reportedly coming out with another superphone, this time with a smaller screen but much more powerful camera to compete with what Nokia is cooking up and, to a lesser extent, the stupidly designed Galaxy Zoom.

Here's an accurate size comparison I made:

EiaGZow.jpg

Great pic - holy bezels on the Z Ultra. Why are they over 50% bigger than any other phone? Mega 6.3 type bezels would be great in the Sony design - this phone is ridiculously large.

Willing to be proved wrong, but it's going to be a niche device vs. the Note 2 or 3/G Pro/upcoming HTC equivalent. As an everyday Note 2 user (with 4-6 hours of on-screen use a day), I can see an everyday, mainstream phone topping out between the Note 2 and Mega 6.3 size (with the sweetspot staying between 4.5-5) but that's it.

Anything larger turns into a tablet that has phone capabilities (e.g. talking at the screen or always using a headset).

Good job at cherry picking that review.
The Galaxy S4 won almost all the daylight pictures based on both detail and color accuracy that you linked except that one or two.

Read the commentary of each shot:

So yes, it's clear that the Galaxy S4 has much sharper, more detailed, more accurate daylight pictures than the HTC One.
Just like it's clear that the HTC One has better night pictures.

So yes, I'd say his conclusion that "Lower megapixels on smaller sensors = better quality actually. Lower pixel density means higher dynamic range which means more vibrant and lifelike colors and highlights not being blown out" is completely false and without evidence.

I cherry picked that one because it demonstrates it most clearly. But if you read the commentary, it says the colors are better on the HTC One for just about all the comparisons. It's not just two. I also conceded that the S4 has sharper pictures. Apex made a good point that the S4 has the advantage in the situations of cropping.

You also linked a comparison of the LCD displays. I don't know why you decided to do that when the discussion is about the camera quality.

I wouldn't mind this. I have always wanted carry one device instead of two.

Edit: They could have made the top and bottom portion (bezels) thinner. Especially the bottom bezel is way too fat and unwieldy.

I hear this all the time. Show me a 1MP camera that gives better Facebook photos than the SGS4. You can't. Yes at a certain point you're cramming too many pixels, so if the GS4 had a 36MP camera, it'd be trash, but comparing 4MP and 13MP, the SGS4 can still do great. That extra cropping ability helps.

I love how people hear about pixel density in sensors and then automatically run for the lower MP sensor. It makes sense from a technical standpoint in SOME cases, but stop saying every high MP sensor = trash. I love how people were all happy about the GNex 5MP sensor because it focused on "quality." Quality my ass. Took worse photos than the GS2 by far.

There are no 1MP cameras with the same sensor size as the SGS4.

With that said, I agree that there's more to quality than just pixel density and sensor size. For example, today's APS-C cameras are much higher in resolution than early gen APS-C DSLRs, but they are better in low light, resolution, and dynamic range.

But the thing is, the megapixel hype have often driven manufacturers to pack way more pixels in a sensor than they should just because it'd sell well to novice buyers that shop based on a few buzzwords.

5.5 inches, and the ability to write with a pencil and i'm sold.

6.44 inches, holy :whiste:

i would love this phone if it was pocket sized, my note 2 is about the max my pocket can comfortably take.

but i gotta say, the waterproof, pencil writing and processor are all amazing.

The problem with the camera is less about the MP and more with the fact that everyone halfasses the cameras on anything above a phone so I don't have much hope that Sony went with 8MP for any quality reason and rather to keep the cost down.

I can't believe how much this is getting overlooked. This feature alone (assuming the screen would hold up I'm sure it will especially with a soft lead although I'd worry about having to wipe the screen constantly or getting it on your hands and clothes) would be huge if it can function as well as the capacitive stylus as no stylus has come close to even a crappy pencil for writing feel. Yes it won't feel like paper obviously but it should still be better than the stylus for pretty much everything so far (yes including Wacom stuff).

I'll assume it won't allow greater precision although that'd be great if it does.
