Sony internal burner incompatible with firewire external enclosure?

I just bought a Sony internal 16x dvd burner model number DRU800A. The problem is that I put it in my combo firewire/USB generic external enclosure and when I have it hooked up via firewire, I get nothing. The drive seems dead. The door won't even open. When I hook it up via USB, it works. What's with this?

No one? I called Sony expecting to get a "we don't support that" response and that's what I got. They don't support the use of their drives in external enclosures of even if you don't use the software that the drive is packaged with. Worthless IMO.

I ran a couple of Nero disc quality tests and compared to my Plextor burning the same media at the same speed, this drive is consistently 20 points or more lower than the Plextor. I would've bought another Plextor if they weren't rebadging Benq's at the moment.
