F*ck you sony. Now I have to worry about my address/phone number/etc getting sold. On top of that - they "don't know" if credit card information was stolen as well.

They're recommending that you cancel and redo Credit Cards... just as if you lost your wallet.

What you can't change is your Name, Address, answers to security questions, etc.

The spammers/crooks, have all that now.

I don't remember if registering for sony online required a credit card. AFAIK, they didn't ask for one - but I don't remember.

Apparently they also have your passwords now, so if you use the same credentials across many sites might want to change them as well.

Now who the f* stores clear text passwords. What is this, grade school? I'd expect something like that from a mom and pop shop, not from a multi billion dollar corporation.

If you have ever given a credit-card online... now is a good time to change it. :)

That's what is truly sick... Sony, Corporation, some might say Hi-Tech...

and they are hacked, and all their customers (that trusted them) are laid to bear.

No question I am sueing Sony.

This is negligence beyond par.

Like I posted in console gaming, I'm very ignorant when it comes to network security on this scale. How concerned should we be in the overall scheme of things? Is this more an indictment of a high-tech company like Sony slacking on their security? Or is it really an example where our information is never really secure no matter where it is? I have to admit, one of the first things I thought was if they can get through Sony's security then how is my bank's web security any more secure?

It's probably the second. People are going crazy about this for no reason. They don't know yet if credit information was stolen, as they have no evidence for it. It is just standard policy because they know some stuff like users and some personal info that you provide was compromised. They're simply waiting for the security company to figure out exactly what happened.

It's only for the PSN service or Qrocity or however you spell it. So if you're not affiliated with that, you're fine. I personally don't have my CC on my PSN account so I don't care. As for my private information, all of mine is fake. You are not required to put in real information because PSN doesn't really DO anything with that info so my address is probably some village in Kenya or something.

And no, they do not require a CC to get onto PSN. Only if you're making a purchase using a CC specfically.

It's a very big deal, because even if actual credit card information was not stolen, then at the minimum, your name, address, cit, state, zip; login and password were stolen.

Security question answers, and you have me...

That is me!

But we can be pretty sure that Credit Card information was stolen too, and thereby Sony's recommendation to reboot your Credit Cards.

The same company who seeds all of their crypto functions with an integer constant.

Remember, PSN was rushed to completion because the PS3 was pretty useless when it came out.

Sony themselves don't know what it is.

How much information have you given to Sony?

-John

I bought a Sony laptop from their website in late 2009. I think that was with a credit card that has expired though. I subscribed to Everquest early last year though...

You are probably in their database that was stolen, and should be concerned.

Glad I never used a CC on the PSN or with Sony in general. Still though, not good my other info was possibly stolen.

I challenge you, where does "credit card used to buy computer computer not associated with PSN " fall under here. Seriously. Find it. This breach was specifically associated with PSN.

It's people like you that make situations such as this worse. You spread misinformation and claim to know things that even the company currently waiting for the information doesn't know. Be quiet, and read the information that is currently being given to us. There is no damn conspiracy or anything.

Stop spreading misinformation that anything that ever had anything to do with Sony is compromised. It is simply not true and you should feel bad that you're fearmongering so damn hard.

Nikolai,

I don't know you from Adam, of course, and what I would recommend to you is to shut the fuck up, when I am talking.

It isn't "fearmongering" - nor is it just Sony alone that has to face this - any online retailer has to face it... It's a major breach and Sony has been slow in dealing with it...

Except the information states that Sony has been working with it as soon as the breach happened. They did the normal route of hiring a third party security company to investigate the breach and the initial forensic reports are coming out now.

Unless Sony could magic up exactly what happened, I don't see how they were being uniquely slow

I'm sorry that you live in a world where the only answer to a rational argument using information currently available is ad hominem insults.
