Seems like stereoscopic 3D viewing will get another boost with Sony looking to get into the game by releasing 120hz TV's. The TV's look like they will already contain some hardware to enable Sony's implementation of stereoscopic 3D images with the only other requirement being a purchase of the 3D glasses.

Sony likely will be pushing this with their Playstation console brand as well as competing in general with the only other game in town which is nVidia. With a lot of game engines turning multi-console it looks like 3D stereoscopic games may get wider native support in games.

Will it require 120Hz or faster LCD? What type of TV are they going to expect their customers to own?

KInda old story. They said months ago they will push 3DTVs next year - I predicted mainstream level by 2011.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't running 3d stereoscopic games take a lot more graphical horsepower? I mean, there are a lot of games on PS3 that don't look that great as it is, I can't imagine them trying to use 3d much.

Well the article says it'll require a little extra hardware but to be honest, it's likely going to be similar in implementation to nVidia's 3DVision. I'd guess it will require 120hz sets. This would be the

I think the relevant quote is here "The 3D-compatible sets will include a small piece of additional hardware that enables them to show 3D content but they'll also work as conventional television sets..." Only conjecture but I'd guess the additional hardware on the TV side would be for 120hz display and the ability to tune the display similar to what nVidia does when it produces the two offset images that creates the stereoscopic effect. It's not truly displaying 3D images after all but a visual trick.

As for a PS3, it shouldn't have trouble displaying two offset images at 30 frames each with some frame doubling tricks to get the desired effects. The PS3 is over-engineered and I'm sure that it could display 120 frames a second with a slight degrade in graphics that wouldn't even be noticeable to the great majority if that is what it takes. More likely the TV would just take a 60 frame per second signal and double it. nVidia's implementation does not require the game to run at 120 frames per second after all.

Keep in mind I'm still not sure how well 3D stereoscopic images will take off and I'm lukewarm to it as a whole. I just saw this and thought with all the hoopla and hype over 3D Vision that some of you might be interested in it.

They are planning on using this for the PS3? lol They will have a class action lawsuit from all the headaches playing at 20-30 fps. Make a new, more powerful console then push this idea.
