Sony gets really desperate with the PS3 vs XBox 360

In a new interview with Japanese news site, Impress PC Watch, Ken Kutaragi once again took a swipe at the Xbox 360 by saying that Microsoft is "going after" the PS2 (not the PS3) with the Xbox 360.

"This time, Microsoft has stated clearly it is going after the PlayStation. However, they are not going after the PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation 2. We are in the middle of developing PS3, so they have no idea what PS3 will be. Because they looked at 2, the Xbox 360 became what it is." said Kutaragi.

To back-up his claims, Kutaragi made an analogy to the competition the original PlayStation had to face at the time it was unveiled.

"The PS1 was misunderstood in the same way," said the father of the PlayStation.

"Even after we said that the PS1 was able to perform 3D calculations while the 3D0 could not, people still insisted both [consoles] had CD-ROM drives and 3D graphics."

But those were not the only words Kutaragi had to say regarding the Xbox 360. When comparing the demos both companies displayed at last month?s E3 expo, Kutaragi said that "the messages of the Xbox 360 and PS3 differ clearly. Xbox 360 emphasized it is a game machine which is complete as a platform. PS3 emphasized the possibility of technology."

Finally, Kutaragi commented that a ?certain famous journalist? said: "Xbox 360 is 1.5, the PS3 is more than what I was expecting, so it's 3.5."

There are tradeoffs. On paper, the 360 is more powerful in some areas while the PS3 looks to be more powerful in others.

yea the PS3 is going to be the almighty powerful machine ... just like PS2 could do real time rendering that looks better than toy story and has a downloadable library of media online, right. those were promises made by sony before ps2 was released, along with other false claims.

xbox360 is going to take the cake this time, no questions asked.

I'll say one thing, Sony is winning over the media in a big way. They took best hardware of E3 at the Game Critics Awards which is judged by just about every media outlet. The media loves grabbing sound bytes from Kutaragi. Even if the PS3 was a pile of crap compared to the hype (like the PS2), Sony is winning on the media front in a big way. This is right out of the "crush the Dreamcast" playbook from five years ago. Microsoft's "kinder and gentler" approach is failing miserably.

what you fail to realize is that PS3 is

a. Running ALL prerendered stuff (aside from KO Kings).
b. It was running on hardware that is "supposedly" what the PS3 will be able to produce as far as power goes. (again, this is sony so who knows)
c. Being very VERY (over)hyped yet again.

Xbox360 on the other hand, while running on Mac hardware, had specific specs saying the HW is about 25% as powerful as it will be when its released. just yesterday the dev kits were shipped to developers so now we'll see the real graphical improvements. Have you seen the Gears of War video showing actual gameplay? It honestly looks pre-rendered for the in game footage, and its 30% of its actual power.

The only downside to the XBox360 campaign as of now is that I think they showed off some games way too early in development. I mean perfect dark 0 was not a game to show off at its current stage in development on that MTV thing. it looked like crap. And the new Tony Hawk game looks like ps2/xbox graphics, nothing special at all.

However, what it does show, is that there are teams hard at work on xbox360 titles and xbox360 is going to have a great launch. mark my words on that.

I heard a rumor that Gates will release Halo 3 on the same day PS3 comes out...even if its done long before that. I don't know if there is any truth to that rumor though.

yea thats his claim. he stated that about a week ago. and at the rate Bungie works, i don't think that game would be done earlier than next year.

*I* fail to relalize that? I think I made it pretty clear I was speaking for the media.

a) The Unreal 3.0 Engine and EA Fight Night were realtime.
b) The dev kits were along the lines of the Xbox 360 dev kits (a fraction of the final system's power)
c) That was my point. And that the media is falling for it, again.

All the 360 and PS3 game videos look the same to me, so I bet they're about on par with each other. Which would suck for Sony because it doesn't come out for another half a year and will cost twice as much.

i never said that, i said sony OVERHYPES. tell me this then ... what did MS say about XBox before it was released that wasn't delivered w/the actual system? I can name atleast 5 things PS2 claimed it would deliver that it wasn't even close to doing ...

ok ok gotcha. its just that w/sony's background, i don't trust their claim on the power of their dev kits (which mainly ran pre-rendered stuff, not much power is needed for that) compared to the actual system.

i mean seriously, did anyone else see the old man's face demo they showed pre-PS2 days that they claimed would be real-time rendering on the PS2 when it actually came out? it was friggin unbelievable, like better than the Unreal 3 engine ... and this was before the ps2 was out.

its all about the games folks, so far the only game i saw that was making me go wow for 360 was Gears of War...on the PS3 they showed FMVs of the next GT, Devil May Cry, Killzone, and a realtime Unreal 3. I know Unreal 3 is coming to 360 but those other titles have me on the PS3 side at the moment.

i don't think its being overhype, i just think its hyped up. i mean MS is showing actual proof of the stuff. they are showing the actual real time interface (on the MTV thing as well as other videos) of how the dashboard on the 360 is going to work. they are showing how the media center is going to work. they aren't making claims on that kind of stuff, they are actually showing it.

Games matter, and thats where Xbox falls flat on its face. The first one had AWFUL games, except Halo, and I don't like FPS' without a keyboard/mouse anyway.

heh if thats on your list, as far as games go, speaking of gameplay, then I'm assuming you haven't playe Killzone 1 on ps2? that game is horrible.
