Sony GDM-FW900 Widescreen CRT

Hello all:

I know Sony no longer makes CRTs but I remembered this one from a while back when I was looking for a CRT (and opted for the G520 for less money). This is a widescreen 24" CRT and I think it looks awesome. Has anyone tried one of these?

Here is a link: click me

The whole reason being that if I were to get a new display I know I probably don't want to get an LCD from all the comments I have heard that they are not yet up to speed with CRTs in gaming and graphic design. Do any other companies (i.e. NEC, Viewsonic, etc.) make widescreen CRTs for computers?

Thanks.

I haven't really heard of any other widescreen CRT monitors, and if there are any, they're probably ridiculously expensive. I seem to remember seeing that you can find one of the Sony ones used/refurbished for $700 or so, which isn't bad at all. And yes, you're right about LCD's not being up to speed with CRT's yet for gaming (and I even have an LCD as my main/only monitor now).

thats about a thousand dollar monitor

pretty good price considering the resolution 2304x1440 @ 80 Hz , 22" viewable, and widescreen. definitely a good alternate option to the 2005fpw if you have the space. Cons to this monitor i guess would be the 20" depth conpared to a LCDs 5" depth (approx including a stand) and of course probably weighs close or more than 100 pounds

I bought one from ebay, unfortunaltly it didn't work, but it was a very high quality build, and I nearly killed myslef getting up the stairs with it.

It used to be like a $2700 monitor so do you think that for around the $1400 range this is a good deal?

Is that A stock or B stock though?

Nevermind I looked it up and see that it is A stock, wow.

Are they a reputable dealer?

You can get a refurbed one from AccurateIT for like $650 all the way to just over a grand. I think they were A stock, but don't remember. I bought a monitor from them (not one of these behemoths) and they did an excellent job with it. Also I believe you get free shipping (which will help a lot on something this big), it might only be freight shipping though.

Yep, all are A stock, run about $699, and come with free freight shipping.

What exactly does "refurbed" mean? It means it was literally busted before, and was sent back to Sony for fixing, right?

I want one of these badly too! Maybe I can convince my dad to pay for part of it. I can't imagine how much shipping would be though...

Well, sometimes refurbed can mean that someone didn't like it and sent it back in, but since they can no longer sell it as new they label it refurbished. It can be minor things, like when some companies go out of business and they pick up a bunch and then have them checked out and they all function fine.

If you order from AccurateIT you get free freight shipping, but otherwise the shipping will come close to $100 or more itself.

btw from the pictures it sorta looks like the surface of the screen on the Sony is *slightly* curved. Is it just me? Or is it curved?

The FW900 is flat... the model before it,the W900, is not flat.

This bad boy is 100lbs. I've been wanting one of these for the last couple of years, not knowing that Sony discontinued their CRT line. 🙁

See that little word Edit that appears below your post?

Might wanna learn to use it if you don't want to get flamed to hell and back.

As for your questions, I don't know what that converts to Canandian, and the monitor should be flat, but on a screen that big there might be some curvature. Can't say for sure, as I don't have one mysfelf.

Well I'm glad to see that my thread was resurrected. I bought one and HL2 never looked so good. SLI + 24" Sony = 1920x1200 2xAA goodness.

I thought widescreen resolutions wasnt working with SLI or is that only a problem with widescreen lcd's?
