They both seem exceptional, around the same price, and close to the same specifications.. Any recommendations?

What about a nice quality 17" monitor that is a bit cheaper?

Neither. Of all 19"ers, I would choose the Samsung 900NF. Less expensive than the G400, yet on the same level of quality and image clarity.

For a 17", I would pick the Samsung 700NF, the 900NF's smaller brother. I'm typing this on a 700NF right now, and it's very sharp.

grumm3t, the GS790 is not a comparable model to the Sony G420. The Viewsonic model that directly competes with the Sony is the P95F

The G790 (GS790 is the short neck version) is a great monitor but it doesn't compete with the G400. The G400 is an aperture grill tube and the G790 is a shadow mask tube. In simple terms, the G790 is not a flat tube whereas the G400 is. I'd definitely go for the G400 if the price was the same. I have a G500 and love this thing.

The G790 and GS790 have a really bad amoire issue. I would avoid both those Viewsonic models.
